The parish church of St. James in the old town

The parish church of St. Jakobus is a Roman Catholic church in the old town of the city of Hünfeld in the Fulda district .

history

781 gave Emperor Charlemagne the monastery of Fulda , the " campus, qui dicitur unofeld " ( "the field, which is called Hünfeld"). The area essentially covers the area of today's large municipality Hünfeld in Hesse.

A small Benedictine monastic settlement was soon established for the economic use, administration and religious support of this donation , which developed into a monastery and, in the 10th century, a monastery . Around this monastery people settled who were in the service of the monastery.

The development of this settlement was promoted and accelerated by the relocation of the trade route between Mainz and Thuringia in the 10th century through the Kinzig valley , via Fulda and Hünfeld in the direction of Vacha to Eisenach . The new route at his Hünfeld rest stop offered good earning opportunities and attracted settlers who could benefit from trade as innkeepers, blacksmiths, wagons, traders, carters, craftsmen and servants. In 1310 the place was granted city rights.

First parish church 1200

The Hünfeld Monastery was responsible for the religious care of the area. The residents were looked after by the monastery parish. As the population grew steadily, the desire for an own parish church grew stronger. This parish church was built around 1200 and consecrated in honor of the apostle James the Elder. An independent parish of Hünfeld is proven as early as the middle of the 12th century. Pastor of this parish was always a canon of the collegiate monastery in Hünfeld. This union between the monastery and the parish church existed until the monastery fell in 1803 during the course of secularization .

Since the establishment of the diocese of Fulda in 1752, the parish of St. Jakobus Hünfeld has belonged to the diocese of Fulda .

Gothic new building in 1506

The first parish church, once built in Romanesque style, gave way to a new building in Gothic style in 1506. Only the two basement floors of today's church tower and the font were taken from the first church.

In the Baroque era , the church was equipped with a magnificent high altar. At the end of the 19th century, art-loving pastors, architects and citizens remembered the parish church, which was once built in Gothic style, and had it restored to its original condition. The baroque furnishings were removed and three neo-Gothic altars were erected; they are colored or gilded carvings by a Würzburg master.

Today's church

Minor changes were made to adapt to the liturgical provisions of the Second Vatican Council. So the communion bench and the pulpit were removed and a new celebration altar was built. A new confessional was also made. A fundamental renovation was completed in 2010.

organ

The organ of St. Jakobus was built in 1979 by the organ building company Hey (Ostheim) and later expanded by two more registers . Today the instrument has 47 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
