The St. Marien Church in Kenz is a former pilgrimage church from the 14th century in the Kenz district of the West Pomeranian community of Kenz-Küstrow .

History and description of the building

The church was built around 1398 as a pilgrimage church in the brick Gothic style on a field stone base near a healing spring. Kenz was the most visited place of pilgrimage in Western Pomerania in the 15th century and became a health resort in the 18th century . The church is a five-bay brick building with a choir closure made up of five sides of a decagon. The architecture shows a recognizable stylistic relationship to the Marienkirche Stralsund . The buttresses are drawn inwards so that the exterior looks flat. The windows are divided by vertical frameworks without a pointed arch. A tracery frieze made of glazed shaped stones runs around the building under the main cornice. Inside, the buttresses form window niches. The slender tower shows a richer aperture structure.

The octagonal fountain house, which stood above the fountain from around 1760 to 1870, was rebuilt in 2003 based on the historical model.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is mainly from the Gothic and Baroque periods. The valuable glass paintings in the six choir windows were made around 1430 and show characters from the Bible and the history of Pomerania , scenes from the life of Mary as well as coats of arms and architecture. They represent the largest inventory of medieval stained glass in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The vault paintings were recreated around 1895 based on remains from the 2nd half of the 15th century. In September 2019 it became known that a depiction of a wild man , draped in fur, roaming a wilderness, was found during construction work . The picture dates from around 1400 and is in a hard-to-reach place behind the organ, between the nave and the tower of the church. The iconography is unusual for a church interior (unique in the region) and the interpretation is open.

An extraordinary hinged wooden tomb (around 1410) is that of Duke Barnim VI. (Pomerania) . A limestone epitaph donated by Duke Philip II (Pomerania) in 1603 also commemorates him .

The triumphal cross dates from the 14th century. The altarpiece and the pulpit were made by Thomas Phalert around 1695.

organ

The two-manual organ with 15 registers was built in 1847 by Johann Friedrich Schulze from Paulinzella and restored in 2002 by Kristian Wegscheider .

local community

The Kenz parish has been part of the Stralsund Provost in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .
