history

epitaph

The late Gothic brick church was built around 1350 on the foundation of an older church, which was also made of brick. The church was consecrated to St. Nicholas until the 15th century and then received the Marian patronage . The church was built in two construction phases from east to west as a three-aisled , six-bay hall church with a wide central nave, narrower aisles and flat curved east ends. By the middle of the 14th century, the three eastern bays, including the three choir closures, had been completed. The three western yokes were then made by the end of the 15th century. In 1483 the west tower burned down and collapsed shortly afterwards. It was renewed in 1562 and received its present form in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Martin Luther took part in the school and church visits in Herzberg in 1522 and 1533. The full-length portraits from the end of the 16th century by Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon are still in the possession of the Marienkirche today.

From 1862 to 1868 the church was completely restored. The neo-Gothic entrance halls of the side portals and the sandstone tracery of the windows, designed according to the drawings by Friedrich August Stüler and building officer Ritter , as well as the two stair turrets of the galleries were also created.

Secco paintings

A special feature of this church is the vault painting from the 15th century, which has been preserved to this day in an extraordinarily artistic quality. The vault paintings were, as was customary in the period of origin, carried out a secco , i.e. on dry plaster. The style of painting is influenced by Bohemian painting at the end of the 14th century. The vault paintings from around 1415 have been completely preserved in the ornamental fields in the south aisle and the figural scenes in the main yokes are almost completely preserved. The pictures are characterized by light colors, figures are shown floating or placed on pillows.

After 1430 the paintings were created in the two main and side aisle bays adjoining the girdle arch . The pictures appear compact and picturesque. The figures stand on a base formed by the vault ribs.

The last main nave bay, which was destroyed by the tower collapse in 1495, was restored in 1709/10 and painted in provincial baroque style. Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ferdinand von Quast campaigned for the preservation of the paintings in the Marienkirche in the 19th century and advised a relatively cautious restoration. Nevertheless, the eastern vaults of the north aisle and parts of Hell from the Last Judgment were painted over.

altar

The altar is from 1765. It shows the scene on the Oelberg in low relief. On the side consoles the figures of Moses and John the Baptist are depicted as preachers of Christ. The altar had a wrought iron grille on the edge of the altar steps, with the inscription 1769 J. G. Dobe . Since 1864 the altar grilles, which closed the choir from the nave, have been in the entrance hall in the west tower.

pulpit

The late Renaissance pulpit stands on the south pillar in the center of the church. Resting on a statue of Paul, it shows the Lord and the four evangelists with their symbols in its parapet ; in between as hermen further apostles . The door wing is painted with half the figure of Christ, who holds the globe and blesses it with his right hand. The whole figure of Peter can be seen below.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font is made of serpentine and is a fluted vessel. Its inscription reads ANNO MDCXXIIII .
