St. Mauritius Church in Altenmedingen

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Mauritius Church is in Altenmedingen in the Lower Saxony district of Uelzen . It contains a remarkable altarpiece from the 14th century.

location

The St. Mauritius Church is on the western edge of the historic center of Altenmedingen. The church can be reached from the west via a narrow path that runs through a small forest. There are a few preserved graves and a war memorial on a small meadow directly north of the church . To the east is the local elementary school with a playground just south of the church.

history

A fortified church on the western outskirts of Altenmedingen is first mentioned in a document in 1200, which probably belonged to the Welf ministerial family Meding . A monastery founded in 1237 in Bohndorf , a few kilometers to the northeast, was relocated to Altenmedingen in 1241 and used, among other things, the existing church building. This was consecrated on August 24, 1241. 1336 left the Altenmedingen monastery and moved to Tzellensen, today's Medingen .

The building history of the church has been shaped by many changes. The original rectangular nave of fieldstone was built probably in the 12th century and by the 14th century choir from bricks extended. Around 1820 the choir vault was replaced by a beamed ceiling . In 1869 the previous round defense tower of the church was demolished and a new west tower made of bricks was built. A small sacristy extension followed in 1887. At the beginning of the 20th century, brick pillars and round arches were added.

Detail of the brick arches

The church is divided into a neo-Romanesque church tower , a simple nave and a choir. These three sections stand out from each other through a different design language. The brick west tower is crowned by a steep, octagonal spire covered with copper. It has a square floor plan and four floors. The church tower is connected to the rectangular nave, the basic substance of which consists of field stones and which has been supplemented by brick masonry in the course of construction work. The outside of the church nave has round arches made of brick. The choir was built in brick. The choir and the nave have a flat beamed ceiling. A sacristy adjoins the choir to the northeast.

Furnishing

The altar is made of plastered brick walls and has a cafeteria from sandstone . The altarpiece is a row altar and was presumably made by Levin Storch at the end of the 14th century. A crucifixion essay was added around 1520. An old altarpiece by the master Markus Richter from 1656 is attached to the south wall.

The pulpit was made in neo -Gothic style and shows the four evangelists in the parapet panels . The sandstone baptism dates from the 19th century and has an oak lid.

Church organization

In addition to the church in Altenmedingen, the St. Mauritius Chapel in Bohndorf also belongs to the Altenmedingen parish , which belongs to the Uelzen parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover . Since May 2019, the Altenmedingen parish has had a parish relationship with the parishes of St. George's Church in Wichmannsburg and St. Michaelis Church in Bienenbüttel. Services are held in the church twice a month.
