The St. Michael Church is a former Roman Catholic church in the Weiche district of Flensburg , which was built in 1963/64 on Ochsenweg and was entered in the monument book in 2006 . It is not to be confused with the St. Michael Church in the neighboring district of Friesischer Berg . With its tower that can be seen from afar, on the access road to Weiche, it is a landmark of the Weiche district.
history
The church, which consists of a dome-shaped rotunda and a separate bell tower , was built in 1963/64 according to designs by the Wiesbaden architect Paul Johannbroer . With its clearly present dome, it is slightly reminiscent of Hagia Sophia . In the vernacular , the received hemispherical church the name "Half the world". The colored concrete glass windows were created at the same time as the church was built, based on a design by the artist Johannes Beeck .
The church was apparently named after St. Michael , who is also known as the patron saint of the Germans and the patron saint of soldiers . It served primarily as a Catholic garrison church for the Catholic conscripts of the Briesen barracks . After the barracks closed in 1997, the number of church visitors decreased significantly. In 2005 the church was closed and profaned . Since then, a suitable buyer for the church has been sought without success. Despite its monument status, the building seems to be endangered. The Action Group for the Healthy District Weiche and the Lower Monument Protection Authority are committed to preserving the building. A revival as a Catholic, Protestant or ecumenical house of God currently (2019) seems to be ruled out.
The next garrison church, the Christ Church on the edge of the Mürwik Naval School, is located in the Mürwik district today .
