Church and churchyard

The St. Nicolai Church is a church in Beidenfleth that belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Wewelsfleth . The building dates in part from the Middle Ages.

Building history

The foundations of the church probably come from the 12th, but no later than the 13th century. The church was probably built by the Dutch who drained and cultivated the marshes. The church was dedicated to Saint Nicolaus , the patron saint of boatmen. In 1325 St. Nicolai zu Beidenfleth is mentioned in a document in the directory of the Hamburg Cathedral Church .

The free-standing wooden bell tower (also known as the bell stack ) belonging to the church has been renewed and restored several times. The tower was built in 1557 and was carried out by Valentin Möller from Itzehoe . The tower was renewed in 1860, followed by several restorations (1989/1990, 1998/99). In 1990 it received a new foundation.

Building description

The brick building consists of a rectangular nave with a retracted box choir . A neo-Gothic vestibule from the 19th century adjoins the choir in the south . The nave has a round arched south portal and pointed arched windows. The windows of the choir are narrowly ogival and arranged in a group of three on the east side. The facing of the church is not original, however, which means that the windows were changed several times. This is how some rectangular windows were created.

The wooden bell tower stands free in the west in front of the nave. It is covered with a tapering hood , like the one found at the Glückstadt Church .

inner space

The interior is largely provided with a flat wooden beam ceiling that spans both the choir and the nave. Only in the west does a wooden barrel cover the area of the organ and west gallery . A large arch separates the nave and the choir and provides a view of the altar. The interior facing is also not original.

The west gallery from 1707 rests on two thin twisted supports made of wrought iron , which end with ornamental spirals. On the parapet you can see 12 gallery paintings (oil on wood) with religious content.

Furnishing

  • altar
The altar of the church dates from 1636/1637 from the workshop of the Hamburg artist Hein Baxmann . The side altar barriers go back to the same time. The twisted columns both on the sides of the altar structure and on the front of the altar barriers are striking.
The architecturally framed carved altar structure shows a sculptural crucifixion scene in the arched main field. The side panels show further biblical scenes in colored reliefs : on the left the Fall , the sacrifice of Isaac and the Passover meal , on the right the Annunciation of the Lord , the Adoration of the Magi and the Last Supper . At the top, the structure ends with an aedicule showing the resurrection of Christ .
The two brass altar candlesticks with balusters and fruit decorations are dated 1694.
  • pulpit
The pulpit, donated by Claus and Margreth Haß in 1704, rests on a twisted column with a floral decoration. This pillar shape also recurs on the parapet of the polygonal pulpit. In the fields between the columns there are full figures of the four evangelists and the Salvator . A richly decorated pulpit staircase and an octagonal sound cover complete the work.
  • Stalls
Old cheek pieces and door panels from the 17th century have been reused in the renewed stalls. Flat carvings and wrought iron door hinges have been preserved.
  • baptism
The bronze baptism from 1340 is the oldest work of art in the church. Four figures standing on a stepped ring support the kettle. The wall is provided in two rows with reliefs of individual figures, above is a circumferential text in capitals .
The approximately 1.3 meter high oak crucifix dates from the late Gothic period at the end of the 16th century. It depicts the crucified with a fluttering loincloth, surrounded by two angels. The quatrefoil ends with the symbols of the evangelists and the large finials placed diagonally are striking .
  • Offering box
The sacrificial box from 1709 is elaborately secured and decorated with wrought iron fittings. It shows rhombus , star and volute ornaments .
  • Stained glass in the choir window
The stained glass was made in 1962 by Professor Einar Forseth from Stockholm. The motifs relate to St. Nicholas and the act of baptism.

organ

The organ was built in 1878 by the organ builder Marcussen & Søn (Denmark). The slider chests -instrument has 10 stops on two manual levels. The pedal (Cd 1 ) is attached to the Hauptwerk. The main work register IV was added later as a replacement for an 8 'trumpet. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.

Churchyard

Several grave steles from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the churchyard. They are designed in the shape typical of the Elbmarschen, as we find them in Wewelsfleth and Wilster .
