history

The congregation of the St. Petri Church was founded on January 1, 1964 and consisted of the towns of Neu Darchau, Klein Kühren , Katemin , Quarstedt , and Darzau , and later also Sammatz . The church council at that time wanted to make Neu Darchau a church center with all the necessary facilities. With this wish they inaugurated the St. Petri Church in 1961 after years of planning, which bears its name because of the boatmen and fishermen in the Elbe bank villages. Five years later, in 1966, the rectory was built. The parish had planned to build a chapel between 1927 and 1929, but the global economic crisis prevented their project. When construction began in 1961, the elevated location was chosen with care. The Neu Darchauer wanted to express the deep bond with the residents of the Neuhaus office on the other side of the Elbe . Due to a lack of money, the Neu Darchauer had to discard their original plans for a larger castle-like church in the 1960s. Instead, a modern and sober brick building with a pointed tower was implemented, the "variant-c-", a more functional variant.

The St. Petri Church cost 225,357 DM at the time . But the original plans were replaced by a cheaper one, because the Neu Darchauern lacked DM 5,000.

After the completion of the church there were several changes: The conversion from oil heating to gas heating or three cracks in concrete and stained glass in 1986. This repair cost 7,216.20 DM. The parapet masonry had to be renewed in 1986 and cost 5,501.30 DM cladding the bell tower costs DM 29,393.76.

architecture

Outer walls
For the functional church, modern, rather sober bricks were chosen, with an ordinary tile roof and a pointed tower with copper cladding. The outer walls are decorated with simple leaded glass windows .

Interior
The church interior has narrow white bars on an orange background that taper towards the center. The walls are white and, when the sun is shining, place the colorful stained glass windows in the foreground. The church building also includes a church center with a community room, a youth home, a tea kitchen and the parish office with archive.

Equipment

Altar, pulpit and baptismal font

  • The altar of the church is simple. Because of this simplicity, the crucifix has a presenting effect above it. The altar dates from 1961, the year the church was built. This altar was made for the St. Petri Church.
  • The pulpit built for this church is also kept very plain and simple . It is made of wood, without decorations and is facing the altar, on the left on a small elevation.
  • The baptismal font consists of a wooden stand and the bronze basin. The shape of the bronze basin is reminiscent of a bell. The baptismal font was also made for the church in 1961.

organ

The organ of the St. Petri Church (Neu Darchau).

The St. Petri Church has a mechanical slider chest organ , this system has proven itself over centuries in organ building . Like all organs, this one also needs a lot of care to keep the good sound.

art

  • A life-size crucifix hangs in a good position above the altar. It was made in 1963 and has been decorating the church ever since.
  • On the altar there is a bronze relief that depicts the Lord's Supper in a slightly abstract manner.
  • Since winter 2010/11 the church has housed a life-size crucifixion group by the sculptor Otto Flath . This work of art was loaned to the community by an insolvency administrator. The crucifixion group did not fit into the church and had to be moved to another room in the church.

Windows and bells

  • The stained glass windows of the church are modern and colorful. The smaller windows have no motifs and are in different colors. Looking towards the altar to the right, you can see a large, colorful window that does not show a concrete motif at first. This window leaves freedom to interpret.
  • The two simple bells were also made around 1961 and have their place in the top of the church.
