The Roman Catholic Chapel of St. Antonius Abt is a listed church building in Tungerloh , a district of Gescher in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Since 1998 the building has been designated as a motorway chapel.

History and architecture

The three- bay chapel stands in the middle of a cemetery on an Iron Age sand dune. It was originally connected to a hermitage . The Gothic vaulted hall in brick building was built in the 15th century. The choir dates from 1433, the nave was rebuilt in 1478. There is a walled- up hagioscope below the choir window . The tower was built in 1885. The interior was redesigned in 1972 and a sacristy was added.

Despite the same stone format, the different masonry associations can be recognized. The choir yoke was built as an alternating structure, the nave in a block structure. A clear construction seam appears above the buttresses between the choir and nave . The masonry is sparingly structured using blocks made of Baumberger sandstone . The window reveals are made of sandstone and brick. The base zone is closed off by a surrounding sandstone cornice at the height of the window parapet . The two-lane tracery windows are closed at the top with a three-pass . The entrance door on the south side of the central yoke has a late Gothic profiled sandstone frame with nested consoles under the lintel . This 15th century door is now called the side entrance, but it was the main portal. The eastern gable wall of the rectangular choir is dominated by a tracery window. The window was renovated in 1869 according to designs by HB Becks and partially rebuilt. Below this window is a small niche that is said to have served as a hatch for communion for the sick.
