St. Apollonia (Großhau)
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Apollonia is located in the Großhau district of the municipality of Hürtgenwald in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
history
The church was first mentioned in 1734. At that time the place belonged to the Bergstein parish as a branch church . In 1804 Großhau became its own parish .
After a lightning strike in 1857, the church was rebuilt for the second time in 1862.
The parish church is St. Dedicated to Apollonia . After the Second World War , the church had to be rebuilt because it was completely destroyed in the battles in the Hürtgenwald . The tower cock, which was born from the rubble after the war, has its place in today's church. His bullet holes of infantry ammunition and shrapnel are still visible today. The current church building was built by 1950 according to plans by architect Hartmann. It was on July 27, 1952 consecrated . In 1971 the sacristy was expanded with an added lounge for schoolchildren who were brought to class by vehicle; Design by architect Lutz Tappert, Düren . The church was then renovated and redesigned and on April 15, 1978 the new altar was consecrated.
