The St. Arnold Church is the Protestant parish church of the Breitungen district of the Südharz community in the Mansfeld-Südharz district ( Saxony-Anhalt ).

history

Today's Arnolds Church goes back to an Arnolds chapel on the Arnoldsberg from the 10th century. This chapel, to which a small monastery was attached, was abandoned in the High Middle Ages. As a replacement for the Arnolds Chapel, a new parish church was built on the Kirchberg, i.e. at a different location, in 1427, which is the patronage of St. Arnold took over. The name of the church probably comes from Saint Arnold von Arnoldsweiler , who died around 800 and was a harp player at the court of Emperor Charlemagne . However, it cannot be ruled out that the patronage refers to Arnulf von Metz . The second Arnolds Church was abandoned at the beginning of the 18th century. This church became Protestant in the course of the Reformation, whereby the patronage remained. There are no more traces of this church. In 1727 the foundation stone of today's church was laid in the upper village; the inauguration took place on August 22, 1734. This church was built in the Baroque style. Inside the single nave church there is a gallery and a pulpit altar from 1735. A four -glass hourglass serving as a pulpit clock is located on the pulpit . "The four hour glasses are calibrated for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes, so that the pastor could estimate the length of his sermon." Since 1891 the altar bible has been on a bible stand carved by wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch from Wernigerode in neo -Gothic style.

organ

The organ of the church is the work of the organ builder Wilhelm Maurer from Rettgenstedt near Kölleda and was installed in 1847. In 1910 the organ got an electric motor. In the 1960s the organ was shut down and left to its own devices. The organ was not completely restored until 2013 and has been playable again since then. Most of the instrument has been preserved in its original condition.
