The Catholic parish church of St. Barbara is located in Dortmund district Dorstfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia. The church, which is under the patronage of Barbara of Nicomedia , was built from 1895 to 1896 by builder Lambert von Fisenne .

history

Dorstfeld was closely connected to Huckarde , where a Catholic church was located, for over 1000 years . When the Free Imperial City of Dortmund accepted the Reformation , the greater part of the Dorstfelder became Protestant . A small part remained Catholic and continued to attend Catholic services in Huckarde. With industrialization in the 19th century, large mines were built in Dorstfeld and many workers from Catholic areas moved to Dorstfeld, so that the number of Catholics grew strongly. In 1887, 1646 Catholics lived here. A church building association with the pastor of Huckarde prepared the establishment of a new parish and the establishment of a parish church . In 1886 the first Catholic pastor, Franz-Friedrich Becker, came to Dorstfeld as vicar . In 1890 he was followed by Thomas Krämer, who became the first pastor of Dorstfeld in 1893 and worked there as a priest for 42 years . During his term of office, the parish was founded on February 3, 1893, the new parish church was built, the parsonage was built , a nurses' station with sisters from the Congregation of St. Vincent de Paul from Paderborn (Vincentian Sisters ) and the new parish of St. Karl Borromäus in Oberdorstfeld in 1921. Pastor Krämer's grave in the old Dorstfeld cemetery is still looked after by the community today.

In the last days of the Second World War , the parish church was badly damaged because a machine gun was positioned in the tower. It was rebuilt in 1948/49. The high steeple, which fell victim to the air raids of World War II, could only be replaced by a smaller one in 1967. In 1974 the exterior and interior were renovated under Pastor Josef Frühauf (pastor in St. Barbara from 1948 to 1976). At the same time, the church building was visually cleared by demolishing the residential development in Teutoburger Strasse that was in need of renovation. The church environment was redesigned and the church square expanded. The final post-conciliar choir room redesign was carried out by Pastor Josef Sickart (Pastor in St. Barbara from 1976 to 1998) with an altar, pulpit and ambo . Since January 1st, 2002 the parish of St. Barbara has formed a pastoral alliance with the parish of St. Karl Borromäus in Oberdorstfeld.

Architecture and equipment

The parish church of St. Barbara is a three-aisled neo-Romanesque basilica with a transept and high east tower . Plans to build two east towers had progressed so far that foundations can still be found today. Finally, a massive east tower with four floors was built. The bell cage is on the top floor .

The church was built from Dorstfeld bricks and structured with sandstone frames and ornaments . These were extensively renovated in 2012. The new color scheme of the sandstone frames and the wall joints on the tower are reminiscent of the destruction in World War II.

Altars

The church is equipped with three sandstone altars: the main altar in the apse of the choir is the work of the sculptor Anton Hellweg from Paderborn. Central motifs of the altar are the depictions of the multiplication of bread and the wedding at Cana. These Eucharistic representations are framed by the four Latin Fathers of the Church, Augustine, Hieronymus, Ambrosius and Gregory the Great. The altar is crowned by a figurative representation of the pelican , which corresponds to the sacrificial lamb under the canteen of the altar. There are also painted representations of the prophets under the cafeteria: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Hosea. Above the cafeteria is the tabernacle and next to it small portraits of the twelve apostles.

In the left aisle, Anton Hellweg's altar of Mary shows the coronation of the Blessed Mother after her physical acceptance into heaven, Mary's visit to Elizabeth and Mary's death.

In the right aisle there is the Joseph altar by Ludwig Braun, which shows Saint Joseph with the boy Jesus in his arms and another depiction of Jesus in Joseph's workshop. In addition, the will canticle of Simeon shown.

The high altar dates from the time the church was built, as do the reredos on the side altars. The canteens of the side altars already existed in the previously used emergency church.

There is also a wooden altar with an icon of the Mother of God with Child (" Perpetual Help ") in the entrance of the church under the organ gallery .

Peal

The parish originally acquired three bronze bells when the church was being built. These were considered "excellent bells" and were therefore spared in the First World War . In 1942 the two larger bells were confiscated, smashed in the tower and melted down. The smaller bell was badly damaged and was also melted down in 1951 as a deposit for the new bell. In 1953 four new cast steel bells were purchased from the Bochum Association . The three big bells are named after the first names of the priests who had worked in Dorstfeld until then: Thomas, Bernhard and Josef. The smallest bell is dedicated to the Virgin Mary . The bell sounds in h ° -d'-e'-f sharp '. The bell is rung daily at 7 a.m., 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the Angelus prayer with the St. Bernhard bell and the St. Joseph bell, and the St. Bernhard, St. Joseph and St. Maria bells partially ring for 15 minutes the church services. The St. Thomas bell is used to strike the hour and is only rung on special occasions. The St. Maria bell is also used for the quarter-hour strike. The striking mechanism for ringing the angelus and the clock of the church was taken out of service in 2011 due to serious damage to the bell cage. For cost reasons, the renovation of the bells could only begin in spring 2018, which should be carried out within the planned three months. Among other things, the clappers were re-bronzed, damage to the bells repaired and repainted and new bell yokes were installed. Furthermore, the defective mechanical striking mechanism was replaced by a radio-controlled electronic striking mechanism. The renovation was successfully completed on September 14, 2018, and the bells have been fully functional again since September 15, 2018.

organ

The organ and the organ brochure from the Stockmann Brothers company from Werl dates from 1905.

Apse of the church

In 1995/96 the inside of the church was extensively renovated and given a color scheme. The windows were created in different phases from 1974 to the 1990s. The five windows in the apse show the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ . They are from Wilhelm Buschulte. The windows in the transept and the aisles show representations from the Old and New Testament and were designed by the glass painter Hubert Spierling .

A Pietà from 1886 is integrated into the Way of the Cross from the 1930s by Paul Rudolf Kruse . The figure of Barbara on the right side of the chancel, like the baptismal font of the church, was probably created when the church was built.

In the rear right aisle there is a place of remembrance and reminder of the killed and missing Catholic Dorstfeld soldiers of the two world wars.
