history

A church in Meckel was first mentioned in writing around the year 800 in a deed of donation to the imperial abbey of Echternach . This church was replaced by today's old parish church in the 12th and 15th centuries. Presumably even then, Meckel was already an independent parish .

At the end of the 19th century the old church became too small for the increased population and it was decided to build a new building elsewhere. The new parish church was built between 1896 and 1898 according to plans by the diocesan master builder Reinhold Wirtz in Trier . Reinhold Wirtz died shortly after the parish church was completed. The Mecklenburg parish church is the last church building that Wirtz was able to implement. The old parish church has been used as a cemetery chapel since the new parish church was built.

Building description

St. Bartholomäus is a single-nave, four-bay hall church in neo-Gothic style with a four-story bell tower in front of it on a square floor plan and a single-bay choir closed on three sides . The building was built from limestone blocks . The interior is vaulted with ribbed vaults and the windows have two-lane tracery .

Furnishing

In the interior, all of the neo-Gothic furnishings from the time it was built have been preserved. Of particular note are the high altar , which was designed as a winged altar , and the wooden pulpit . A late Gothic sacrament niche was taken over from the old parish church .

Furthermore, the church has an ornamental painting, also preserved from the time it was built. It was whitewashed in the meantime, but was completely exposed again in 1985 and 1986 and partially supplemented.
