The Catholic parish church of St. Clemens in Herbertshofen , a district of the market town of Meitingen in the Swabian district of Augsburg in Bavaria , was built in 1754/55 and is a protected architectural monument .

history

The origins of today's parish lie in the solitude of Ehekirch . The so-called original parish included the villages of Erlingen , Herbertshofen and Meitingen . Already in the Middle Ages there was a place of worship dedicated to St. Clemens . Since 1412 and 1477, the church set with the right of presentation belonged to the Augsburg cathedral chapter . Like her mother church, St. Clemens had three altars, a tower with two bells and a cemetery. The branch was cared for in pastoral care from Ehekirch and at times also from Biberbach . In 1700 the church was completely renovated and expanded. In 1710/11 the roof of the cemetery chapel was renewed. In 1736, Barbara Rotschopf from Herbertshofen donated to renovate an altar.

Due to the dilapidation of the old parish church of St. Martin in Ehekirch and the arduous journey of the parish children, it was decided in 1752/53 to move the parish to Herbertshofen. The previous building had to give way for the new parish church in Herbertshofen. The lead architect was the builder Hans Adam Dossenberger from Wollishausen , a student of Dominikus Zimmermann . The wall and ceiling paintings were created by Johann Baptist Enderle from Donauwörth based on designs by Franz Martin Kuen . The consecration of the church by Auxiliary Bishop Franz Xaver Imperial Baron von Adelmann zu Adelmannsfelden took place on August 7, 1758.

During the tenure of Pastor Josephus Baumüller, the church was extensively renovated. In 1851 the frescoes of the stations of the cross and the pictures of the apostles were repaired. In 1854 new side altars were purchased by Georg Schwarz from Augsburg and the sacristy was enlarged in 1855 and 1886. The Munich art academy painter Johann Baptist Müller painted the new altarpieces .

In 1908/09, during the tenure of Pastor Franz Josef Dillmann, the furnishings from the 19th century were partially reversed, new pews were purchased and the gallery parapets were redesigned by Carl Port from Augsburg. In addition, the church received a new organ case by the sculptor Martin Bigelmair from Oberhausen . In 1909 the belfry was also renewed and reinforced. Further renovations took place in 1958/59 and 1982/84.

description

The stucco work is attributed to Hans Adam or Joseph Dossenberger . The wall and ceiling paintings by Johann Baptist Enderle show the veneration of the altar sacrament in the choir , and the martyrdom of St. Clement and to the side scenes from the life and glory of St. Clement. Stations of the Cross and Apostles can be seen on the walls. Over the confessionals hang the portraits of David and St. Peter. The splendid pulpit, also created by Dossenberger, also dates from the time it was built. The high altar was made according to Enderle's plans in 1761/62 and redesigned in 1783. The neo-baroque figures were created around 1930.
