History and architecture

In the 10th century, an own church of the Meschede canonical monastery was mentioned. The design of the previous church from the 12th century has not been handed down, it was demolished except for the tower in 1822.

The neo-Gothic stepped hall with a choir closed on three sides was built between 1822 and 1825. Sacristies are built on both sides . The Romanesque west tower looks stately. It is structured by numerous acoustic arcades with set columns and cube capitals. The high, stepped baroque dome was renewed in 1998. In the spacious interior of three square and one narrow yoke, ribbed vaults rest on round pillars. Single-hip vaults have been drawn into the side aisles . The renovation and expansion were carried out in 1876 according to plans by Arnold Güldenpfennig . Extensive renovations were carried out between 1992 and 2000. The exterior is structured by buttresses . There is a wooden crucifixion group in the choir . Maria and Johannes come from the altar of the Dominican Church in Soest, which was demolished in 1814, and are probably a work by Heinrich Stütting from the first half of the 18th century. The six-part peal represents the rare combination of three small cymbal bells with three larger bells. The bells sound in the tone sequence d'-e'-g'-f "-a" -c "'.
