St. Dionysius is the Roman Catholic parish church in Oos , a district of Baden-Baden .

history

A church in Oos is first mentioned in 1257; the Dionysius - patronage , however, points to a foundation as a mother parish in the early Frankish period. In the Middle Ages, Oos was assigned to the parish of Baden and only became independent in 1509.

Today's church was built from 1864 to 1868 according to plans by the important historicist architect Heinrich Hübsch (1795–1863), a Weinbrenner student. After Hübsch's death, the execution in a different form was the responsibility of his pupil Lukas Engesser .

The south wall, which was badly damaged by a bomb detonation during the Second World War in December 1944, was rebuilt in the 1950s. In the 2000s, the tower and the vaults were statically renovated, and the interior was restored from 2015.

Building

Based on northern Italian models, St. Dionysius is a three-aisled , five-bay basilica without a transept in the classicistic - neo-Romanesque arched style with hollow vaults . The side aisles are only slightly lower than the central nave, so that despite a low upper aisle, the spacious impression of a hall church results. The building material is reddish sandstone . The bell tower rises above the portal in the west, the widened basement floors of which are integrated into the structure.

The furnishings include the font from the 16th century, a figure of Dionysius by Niklaus von Hagenau (1506) and side altars from the Rococo . The high altar comes from the time it was built. The original wall painting was reduced to ornaments on the arcades and belt arches .
