history

History and naming

Until the founding of the parish vicariate in Maur in 1990, the history of the Catholics in Maur was closely linked to that of the parish of St. Antonius Egg. In the course of industrialization in the 19th century, Catholics returned to Maur for the first time since the Reformation in Zurich. These were initially looked after by the parish of Uster , founded in 1876, and from 1925 by the newly founded parish of St. Antonius Egg. When more and more Catholics settled in Maur after the Second World War , the pastoral care of St. Antonius Egg could no longer be managed alone, so that the parish parts of Ebmatingen and Binz of the Zurich parish of St. Anton in Hottingen and later the parish of Maria Krönung Zurich- Witikon was left. The parish parts of Maur , Uessikon and Aesch remained with the parish of St. Antonius Egg. From the 1960s, church services were held every 14 days in the Aesch school with the Jesuits from the Zurich Academic Center; A bus service from Maur has been set up for the regular church services in St. Antonius Egg.

Development and construction history

The strong growth of the Catholic population in the political community of Maur reinforced the desire in 1980 for their own pastoral care to be present on site. In 1981, the Egg Church Administration was able to reach an agreement with the Marianists , according to which this order took over pastoral care in Binz-Ebmatingen. The Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach , appointed a Marianist as parish vicar of the community of Maur on September 30, 1982 and thus founded a parish vicariate that did not yet have its own church. In the Ebmatingen district , the Roman Catholic Kultusverein Zürich , represented by the pastor of St. Anton, acquired a building plot and transferred it to the newly established Leeacher Ebmatingen Foundation . After the founding of the parish vicariate, planning began for the construction of a church center on this property. The pastor for Maur moved into an apartment on Bachtelstrasse next to the building plot . However, due to various appeals from neighbors, the further planning of the church center dragged on until 1989. During this time the services took place in Ebmatingen in the singing hall of the Leeacher school house , in Aesch in the prayer room of the Zollingerheim and in Maur in the castle barn . The groundbreaking ceremony for the church center took place on March 28, 1989, and the foundation stone was laid on September 17 by Vicar General Gebhard Matt. On December 2, 1990, the Church of St. Francis was consecrated by the former bishop Johannes Vonderach. Between 2007 and 2008 the church center in Ebmatingen was expanded to include a hall and parish offices. In the years 2018 to 2019 the building was comprehensively refurbished technically and energetically and received new interior and exterior lighting. The cross of the church tower is illuminated again three-dimensionally at night to draw attention to the location of the church. A PVT system with photovoltaic and thermal panels is now installed on the entire roof area of the building ; The heat generated in summer is fed via probes into a geothermal storage tank, which is used to heat the building and the church in winter and cool in summer, so that the building has been emission-free since then. The parish received the European Solar Prize 2019 for the renovation .

With 6,702 members (as of 2017), the parish of Egg is one of the larger Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Naming

Since the mother parish of the church in Maur is consecrated to St. Anthony of Padua , it made sense to dedicate the second church in the parish to St. Francis , the founder of the Franciscan order, to which St. Anthony had also joined. The consecration to the founder of a mendicant order reminds the wealthier Christians of the community of the call of the Christian faith to use the financial means for the good of the poor and the general public.

Building description

Exterior

The church of St. Franziskus is located in the Ebmatingen district between the quiet Bachtelstrasse and the busy Zürichstrasse . The ecclesiastical center including the church is shielded from the street noise of Zürichstrasse by a noise protection wall , on which the church tower is located a little apart from the church.

Church tower and bells

Steeple

The bell tower houses two bells that were cast in the H. Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau on September 28, 1990 , consecrated on December 9, 1990 by Dean Peter Bachmann and then wound up in the tower. Their names go back to two chapels in the municipality of Maur: On the Wassberg there was a residence of a hermit, which was probably built in the second half of the 14th century, together with a chapel, in which the Virgin Mary and St. Ursus were venerated. When there was extensive clearing of the Wassbergholz towards the end of the 15th century , it was converted into a farmhouse. A chapel is said to have been located in Aesch a little longer, namely until the Reformation . According to a document from 1451, it was consecrated to St. John and probably stood below the Eggenberg at the early medieval burial place.

Interior and artistic equipment

Stained glass window by Fra Roberto

From the church forecourt you get through a blue portal on which the church saint's hymn of the sun is printed into a foyer , which leads into the church through a door on the left. The church, built by the architect Bert Allemann, was designed by the artist Georg Malin . The liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council called for "the full and active participation of the whole people" (SC 14), which is why Georg Malin had already opened the altar area in the church of Maria Krönung in Zurich-Witikon and oriented it towards the assembled community. The lecture cross set up in the choir room towers above the other objects and bears a cross, circle and square with a stylized body. “The circle as the most absolute graphic symbol stands for divinity and the afterlife (gold-plated), the inscribed square as an ancient world formula (chrome steel). These signs are meaningfully connected and fixed by the cross. ”The altar is created as a cubic marble block, under which the relics of St. Francis of Assisi are located. The five notched consecration crosses in the altar are reminiscent of the five wounds of Christ and create a reference to the stigmas of St. Francis. The baptismal font is designed as a cylinder and refers to the circle in the lecture cross as a sign of divinity and community. The glass holy water basin at the entrance to the church and the eternal light also take up the basic shapes of the lecture cross. The ambo consists of a massive reading desk made of chrome steel. The tabernacle is a cubic container that appears to float on the chrome steel frame. The twelve consecration crosses are set in massive square chrome steel plates in the area of the church. Behind the chancel there is a stained glass window made by the Capuchin Fra Roberto. The artist writes about the design of the choir window: “The deep, dark tones in the lower part become lighter as they strive up towards the center, from which the same radiant shape slides down from above: symbol of a spiritual unity. We can find this unity in God. It is the result of our search and questioning for meaning and lasting values. ”The partition wall that existed during the construction of the church , which separated the church space from the chancel on mundane occasions, was dismantled after the extension was built in 2009 because the idea of the church as a multi-purpose hall was not had proven itself.

organ

The organ builder Ferdinand Stemmer from Zumikon built an instrument in the organ gallery in 2009, the organ prospect of which takes up the ceiling design of the church. The organ has two manuals and a mechanical action. The 13 registers with their 796 pipes were created according to the specifications of Rudolf Meyer .
