Castle Church of St. George

The Protestant village church of St. Georg is in the community of Großneuhausen in the district of Sömmerda in Thuringia .

history

The church was built from 1728 to 1729 under the patronage of the von Werthern family and was consecrated on November 21, 1729. It served the von Werthern family as a castle church . It was also available to the parish for celebrations, baptisms , weddings and funerals . The building is almost in its original condition and is one of the most artistically valuable churches in Thuringia. Johann Adolph Richter provided the design .

The nave with wooden barrel formwork is decorated with stucco and ornaments . The prospectus of the organ on the second gallery is decorated in white and gold, and with angels decorated and pictures. The pulpit altar with life-size figures takes up the height of the church and is framed by the boxes with the coats of arms of the noble families . A parapet separates the chancel from the nave. In the middle is the lectern .

The interior of the church is painted in rococo colors - white, pink and light gray. The pews were taken over from the previous building, they are painted and labeled with the names of the local families. Traditionally, the women sat in the nave and the men on the first gallery.

The 30 meter high church tower west of the nave bears a bell cast in 1383 .

The organ was built by the then well-known Gotha court organ builder Christoph Thielemann and completed in 1730. Johann Nicolaus Bach , a great cousin of the famous Johann Sebastian Bach, examined it and attested a successful structure and a good sound. It has 22 stops on two manuals and a pedal . In 1865 the organ was rebuilt by Friedrich Gerhardt in the existing case and restored in 2001 by Rösel & Hercher Orgelbau . The total number of pipes is 1214, of which 537 are made of wood and 677 are made of metal.

Historical peculiarity

In 1841 the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath married a friend of Johann Wolfgang Goethe there . She is buried in the historical part of the cemetery .

The crypt under the chancel was used for burials of the noble family until around 1800.
