St. Georg in Großweil

The Roman Catholic branch church St. Georg in Großweil in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen belongs as part of the parish of St. Tertulin Schlehdorf in the Heimgarten-Schlehdorf-Ohlstadt-Großweil parish to the Werdenfels dean's office of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . The church at Alter Kirchenweg 3 is a listed building .

history

The late Gothic church in its core was redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century and extended in 1835 and given a new tower.

Due to the large increase in population in Großweil after the Second World War , the church became too small and a new building was necessary, which was built less than 100 meters south in 1961/62: Neu-St.-Georg . Since the last major renovation, weekdays fairs have been held again in Alt-St.-Georg.

Description and equipment

The geostete Baroque style hall church has a west roof skylights -Turm.

The rococo choir altar was made in 1778 by the Kleinweiler Kistler Johann Georg Miller. On the left of the tabernacle is a figure of St. Scholastica , on the right of St. Benedict . The lay chair was made in 1794.

To the right of the door to the former sacristy , a Gothic fresco from the 13th or 14th century was uncovered during the last major renovation . It represents the crowning with thorns represent Christ. Also in this renovation was a choir screen from sandstone found which was built around the year 800.

The church is surrounded by the late medieval cemetery wall made of tufa blocks and quarry stone .
