St. Georg in Plößberg

The Catholic parish church of St. Georg in Plößberg , a municipality in the northern Upper Palatinate , was built between 1916 and 1918 in the historicism style. It is a listed building.

history

The Catholic parish church of Plößberg was built between 1916 and 1918 after the simultaneum between Catholics and the Protestant part of the population was lifted. Until the end of the First World War , the now Protestant parish church of St. George was used by both denominations. The architect of the sacred building was Josef Koch from Regensburg .

Building description

The church building is a neo-baroque hall structure which is structured by pilasters. An extension in the form of a transept was built in the middle of the nave. The sanctuary is drawn in and closed on three sides. The nave and the choir are vaulted by a flat barrel vault with stitch caps. The church tower built on the south side of the choir has an onion dome typical of the region .

Interior

The church's Baroque Way of the Cross from 1766 was taken over from the old church. The donated glass windows are partly colored. The walls of the church pews are with religious allegories decorated that were for 420 marks by Ludwig Kinle, an unemployed father, carved in the 1918th

The gallery has a bulging parapet in the middle and a simple organ front with Rococo echoes. The vault was also provided with Neo-Rococo stucco work . The transept, with the side altar Herz Jesu, in the shape of an octagon crosses the nave in the middle. All the altars in the church and the pulpit are in the neo-Romanesque style. The side altars of the middle nave are provided with relief panels, of which the left altar shows St. Sebastian , who was venerated in Plößberg for a long time. On the right altar the Queen of Heaven can be seen with the baby Jesus, who is carried by angels on clouds.

The chancel shows two Baroque paintings on the left side wall, which originally come from the Protestant church of St. Michael in Weiden. The mural on the right wall shows the scene of the Conception of Mary . In the high altar , a painting shows St. George , the dragon slayer. On both sides of the altar are the life-size figures of St. Peter and St. Paul. The long windows next to it show the Saints Joseph and Michael. Above it, allegories of the virtues of faith, love and hope are illustrated in three round windows.
