The Catholic parish church of St. George in Svätý Jur (Sankt Georgen), a town in Okres Pezinok in Bratislavský kraj in western Slovakia , was built in the Gothic style at the end of the 13th century . It is consecrated to St. George , who is venerated as a martyr and one of the fourteen helpers in need. The church, which has valuable works of art and funerary monuments from the Gothic and Renaissance periods , is on the list of listed objects in Svätý Jur .

history

The construction of the church began around 1280. In the period that followed, it was changed and expanded several times. In 1663 the bell tower burned down and was replaced by a free-standing, wooden, low tower.

George altar

George altar

The most important piece of equipment in the church is the high altar, carved from a white sandstone block in the style of the early Renaissance, which was probably made around 1527. It is consecrated to the patron saint of the church, St. George, and depicts scenes from his legend. The central scene shows St. George thrusting his lance into a dragon's mouth. The side scenes are dedicated to his martyrdom.

On the left is St. Christopher carrying the baby Jesus on his shoulders, on the right is a king who is holding the model of a church in his hand. The two figures above represent St. Catherine of Alexandria with her attributes , the sword and the wheel, on the left and St. Barbara of Nicomedia on the right . The altar is crowned by the figure of the Archangel Michael , who weighs souls. In the two niches of the predella , the birth of Christ is depicted on the left and the flight to Egypt on the right.

Gravestone of Count Georg
  • The Gothic marble tombstone of Count Georg is inscribed all around and dated with the year 1467. The deceased is depicted as a reclining figure in his armor, a lion rests at his feet, next to it lies the helmet with the deceased's coat of arms. He is holding a coat of arms banner in his right hand and a spear in his left.
  • In the south aisle is a marble sarcophagus , which in 1550 for Count Kaspar of Sereď was made.
  • On the gravestone from 1572 set into the wall, the deceased couple is shown, led by angels to the ladder to heaven , where God the Father awaits them. The relief is flanked by two herms and crowned by an ornamental gable with an angel sputte. An elaborately framed plaque with an inscription is attached under the tombstone.
  • Another Renaissance tombstone set into the wall commemorates Christophorus Gardani and his wife, who are shown kneeling under the risen Christ with their children, who presumably have already died before.
