The St. Gottfried Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in the south of Münster , not far from the St. Clemens Hospital .

history

The parish of St. Gottfried was founded in 1952. In that year, the foundation stone for the St. Gottfried Church was laid. It was built according to a design by the architect, sculptor and painter Hans Dinnendahl (Telgte) and consecrated in 1953. The namesake is Gottfried von Cappenberg , a Westphalian nobleman who lived from 1097 to 1127.

The tower was completed in 1958, it houses a five-part bell. In 1963 the Marienkapelle was expanded, in 1974 the crypt was completed. In 2002 the chancel was redesigned.

inner space

The church is designed as a single nave church interior with a semicircular choir . The tower is in front of the church in the west, on the south side. The Marienkapelle is also on the south side.

In front of the west wall there is a large organ and singer gallery , through which the rose window on the west wall is partially covered. The rosette itself consists of a central round window, which is surrounded by seven other somewhat smaller round windows. The central round window shows the Mother of God as a queen with outspread arms. The surrounding round windows contain symbols that indicate stages in Mary's life (including dove, pierced heart).

The baptismal font is located below the organ gallery .

The interior of the church manages without pillars. The wall surfaces are made of masonry that is painted white. In the upper third of the walls, including the choir, there are equally large windows with round arches at equal intervals. Above is a flat, dark brown wooden ceiling.

Sanctuary

In the choir there is a “double” altar, the original one, and a new, upstream altar island on which the altar is located today.

The original altar complex is, so to speak, a “building under construction”, a step-like, rising, semicircular “complex” bordered on the outside by a wall, which is set off from the outer wall by a wide walkway.

Its central end is a shield wall made of Belgian granite, on which stands a crucifixion group , which was also created by Hans Dinnendahl. In the middle stands the cross with the figure of Christ without a crown of thorns , flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John . In front of the shield wall is the sacrament altar, also made of granite.

In 2002, the celebration altar was removed from the original altar structure, made a little smaller and placed on the upstream altar island.

Choir window

The five choir windows are designed figuratively. The middle window shows Christ enthroned. To the left and right of it are depictions of angels, on two windows each an angel swinging a censer , on each of the other two an angel blowing a trumpet .

crypt

The crypt is located below the choir. It was expanded into a weekday church from 1973–1974.

organ

organ

The organ was built in 1978 by the Muddenhagen organ builder Lothar Simon . It has 28 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The trumpet of the main work is visible as a Spanish trumpet in front of the case and radiates into the church. The playing and stop actions are electric.

Bells

The tower houses a five-part cast steel bell , tuned to the tone sequence c'-e'-g'-a'-h '. The bells were cast in 1958.

Remodeling and litigation

The change in the sanctuary, in particular the reduction in size of the celebratory altar, led to years of legal dispute over the relationship between copyright law and the church's right to self-determination .

One of the two heiresses of Hans Dinnendahl sued for demolition. In 2008, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) overturned the appellate court's judgment in favor of the lawsuit (Higher Regional Court Hamm) and dismissed the lawsuit.

In the opinion of the Federal Court of Justice, the renovation measures violated the prohibition of changes under copyright law, but the interest of the municipality in a renovation outweighed the author's interest in preservation.

The BGH did not consider the church's right to self-determination and the basic right of religious freedom of the community to be adequately observed. The decisive factor for the decision of the BGH was that the congregation had substantiated its self-image or its conviction of faith and presented it in a comprehensible manner, especially with a view to the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . The state must therefore abstain from evaluating this knowledge of faith.

In addition, it should be taken into account that the author side knows that the owner wants to use a building for a specific purpose and must therefore expect that changing needs of the owner may result in a need for changes to the building. The creator of a church knows that the parish wants to use the house of God for their worship services and must be aware that changing beliefs about the design of the worship service give rise to the need for a corresponding redesign of the church interior.
