Christian Ferdinand von Podewils
Christian Ferdinand von Podewils (born October 17, 1768 in Sehmen , † January 14, 1831 in Brieg ), was a Prussian major general .
Life
He came from the well- known noble family of Podewils , who lived in Pomerania . His parents were the heir to Penken and Sehmen , Gottlieb Wilhelm von Podewils (1734–1775) and his wife Luise Charlotte Juliane, née von Reibnitz (1740–1784). Christian von Podewils was married to Karoline Wilhelmine Charlotte von Liebenroth (1774–1810) since 1793. The marriage resulted in three daughters and three sons. One daughter died young, the other two married Prussian officers. All three sons also became officers in the Prussian army , including the later major general Ferdinand Friedrich Wilhelm Werner von Podewils (1801–1881).
Podewils began his career as a corporal in the infantry regiment "von Rohr" . In 1784 he became a portepeefähnrich , in 1786 a real ensign , in 1788 a second lieutenant and in 1794 advanced to the position of adjutant of the 2nd battalion . Podewils then took part in the suppression of the Kościuszko uprising in 1794/95 , which ultimately ended in the partition of Poland .
In 1798 Podewils was promoted to prime lieutenant, in 1803 to staff captain in the grenadier battalion "von Vieregg". In 1806 he took part in the Fourth Coalition War and was taken prisoner off Lübeck . In 1807 Podewils was again with the troops in the rank of captain and was commandant at the top of the Fresh Spit near Pillau .
In 1808 Podewils was promoted to company commander in the 2nd Brandenburg Infantry Regiment . In the same year he switched to the Pomeranian Grenadier Battalion in the same position. In 1812 Podewils was promoted to major and then in 1813 commander of the Pomeranian Grenadier Battalion. Podewils took part in the Wars of Liberation and fought at Groß Bereren and Dennewitz . For participating in these battles he was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and the Russian Order of Saint Anne, II. Class. He was wounded in the Battle of Leipzig and was awarded the Iron Cross First Class and the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus, Second Class. He then took part in the siege of Stettin and Magdeburg as well as in other armed conflicts near Hoyerswerda , Thießen and again Leipzig .
In 1813 Podewils became interim commander of the 13th Silesian Landwehr Infantry Regiment , advanced to lieutenant colonel in 1815 , was with the salaried trunk of the Breslau Landwehr regiment in 1816 and was promoted to colonel in 1819 . In 1820 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion in Brzeg. Podewil's wish to become the commandant of a fortress could not be granted because no such position was vacant. In 1829 he received his retirement with the character of major general and pension .
