Dedication inscription from the middle of the 12th century

St. Jakob is a small church in Grissian, a fraction of the municipality of Tesimo in South Tyrol . Significant Romanesque frescoes from around 1200 have been preserved inside .

location

The east- facing mountain church rises on a steep hill that marks the highest point of the hamlet of Grissian. An old high path leads past the square . At a time when the basin was still swampy, it was a main artery connecting the Meraner Land with the Non Valley and the Lake Garda area . It has served as a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela since the Middle Ages .

history

The heavily fragmented Latin majuscule inscription in the apse shows that the church was consecrated on May 12, 1142 by Bishop Hartmann von Brixen . Accordingly, the church was built by the married couple Rudolf and Atha and numerous relics have been repositioned in it. Around 1200 the apse and the triumphal arch were frescoed in the Romanesque style of the Marienberg school. A chaplain of his own is also attested for the first time since 1279 . In 1323 "sanctus Jacobus in Grissano " is mentioned in a testamentary decree of an Eppo von Tisens in favor of the Heiliggeistspital in Bozen . The church tower was added in 1380. The frescoes on the south and north walls were created around the same time and were only uncovered during a restoration in 1956. The nave vault dates from the 17th century.

description

The painting on the triumphal arch shows the sacrifice of Abraham, including Cain and Abel . The frescoes on the south and north walls show a crucifixion scene and the adoration by the Magi. The Lebenberg coat of arms is located under the framing folding ribbon border of the frescos on the south wall .
