St. Johann in Lemgo

St. Johann is an Evangelical Reformed parish church in the inner city of Lemgo . The history of this church building can be traced back to around 780.

history

The history of the church building dates back to 780 and is seen as the nucleus of the city of Lemgo. Lemgo was founded in the time of Charlemagne . Concrete evidence was provided by determining the age of a small piece of bone from the St. Johann cemetery using the radiocarbon method . Presumably this first church had a Kilian patronage.

The Franciscan monastery with its church, also known as the Brethren Monastery, was located near the former St. John's Church .

The monastery was founded on the site of a farm that the squire Johann von Molenbeck had made available to the Franciscan observants in Hamm in 1463 . Due to the Reformation, the new foundation did not have a long life.

Building history and style

Blunt tower

After the destruction of the Church of St. Johannis extra muros (St. John Outside the Walls) in 1638, the church was given to the Johannis parish . The blunt tower testifies to the old church and carries the bells.

The church has been changed many times, both internally and externally. What it looked like at the time of the monastery is not known. Inside there is no trace of the former furnishings. From an engraving by Lemgo by Lennep (1664) it can be seen that the church at that time had a gable roof and a roof turret with a slender tip. The hipped roof and the onion-tipped roof turret come from the radical renovation of the church under Pastor Pothmann in 1799. At that time, the gable with the clock was added.

In the style of most monastery churches, the Brothers Church is only broken up by windows on one long side, which gives the interior an evenly warm light.

Furnishing

inside view

Well protruding galleries surround the room on three sides, supported by twisted columns. The parapet shows delicate carvings in the taste of the Baroque period . According to the coat of arms of Count Casimir zur Lippe-Brake in the middle, this equipment dates from 1684.

The pulpit also dates from that time. It is a gift, as the inscription and the splendidly carved coat of arms of the founder show:

“The well-bored wife Dorothea Christina De Wreden gebohrne Von Exterde honored this Cantzel in memory of her only daughter Theodore Hermine de Wreden, who was buried at this church. 1683 "

In 1970 the organ was replaced by a new one from the organ building company Gustav Steinmann Orgelbau .

The small cast steel bell (tone b 2 ) in the roof turret is the successor to a medieval bell and is used to strike the clock .
