The village church is next to the Benedictine Abbey Church of St. George and also to Weltenburg belonging Frauenbergkapelle the third church building world Petersburg.

history

The beginnings of the Weltenburg village church go back to the 12th or 13th century, when the first church was built in the Romanesque style. The base of the tower, which contains the choir room (so-called choir tower church ) , is still preserved from this church . The core of the nave goes back to a late Gothic building from 1463, which was consecrated four years later. With the Baroque renovation in 1718, the church was essentially given its present form. In particular, the baroque interior was purchased and the tower structure with onion dome was built. During the Whitsun flood in 1999 , the church near the Danube was flooded; while the water was just below the pulpit , that is, about a man's height in the interior. As a result, all three altars had to be painstakingly restored and the stalls completely replaced. Light, portable pews were purchased that can be quickly carried out in the event of another flood.

description

The small church building has a simple, largely undivided exterior and is designed as a choir tower church. The three-bay nave with arched window openings has a flat ceiling , the square windowless choir is spanned by a late Gothic vault . It is clearly drawn in through a round choir arch and is located in the four-storey Romanesque tower substructure, which, like the nave, has an unstructured exterior. The baroque upper floor is built on this with rounded corners and pilasters , which ends at the top with an onion dome and double cross .

The main elements of the church furnishings - the high altar , the two side altars and the pulpit - are made in the Baroque style. The popular altar and the ambo are adapted to the baroque furnishings. The high altar contains three paintings depicting Mary with the baby Jesus (center) and the church patron Johannes the Täuer (left) and Johannes Evangelist (right). The left side altar sheet shows St. Leonhard ; In the upper picture is the founder of the Benedictine order, St. Benedict of Nursia . The right side altar shows St. Anthony of Padua on the altar sheet, and St. Scholastica , the sister of the founder of the order Benedict , in the upper picture .
