The parish church of St. Johannes Evangelist is a Catholic church in this brook , a district of the market Regenstauf .

Building history

The parish in Regenstauf was responsible for the pastoral care of the predominantly Catholic population of thesebach until the 1970s. Since the number of inhabitants of this brook increased considerably in the years after the Second World War, in 1965 a suitable, approx. 5,000 m 2 large property for the construction of a catholic church was acquired in the new building area of this brook .

To plan the church and the parish center, the habenbacher Kirchenbauverein was founded in 1968, the approval for the church building project was given by the bishop's office in Regensburg in December 1972. Three years later, in December 1975, the architect Alexander von Branca received the building and art committee of the diocese The contract was awarded and construction began in the spring of 1977. The consecration of the church took place on July 15, 1979 by Auxiliary Bishop Vinzenz Guggenberger .
The church is consecrated to the Evangelist John, his patronage festival is on December 27th.

St. Johannes Ev. was originally a branch church of the parish of St. Jakobus in Regenstauf, but with its own pastor; In 1985 it was raised to the status of an independent parish.

Building description

Alexander von Branca, who likes to build his buildings in the style of ancient Roman architecture, wanted to build a building in this rural area that conveys the element of festivity in all its simplicity . Therefore only bricks and especially wood were used as building materials, the external facades are plastered white.

Around a spacious inner courtyard, which is only accessible from the west side, are grouped some outbuildings as well as the squat, only 16 m high bell tower, in the east the church and on the south side sacristies, offices and the rectory.

The church (an irregular octagon in plan ) with windowless exterior walls receives plenty of daylight through a ribbon of glass in the ridge of the gable roof . Inside the church, six wooden round pillars over 10 m high (four behind the altar, two behind the parapet of the organ gallery) support this glazed part of the church roof.

Furnishing

Well-known artists have contributed to the interior decoration: The altar, made from a single granite block, was made by the Weiden sculptor Günter Mauermann , as was the font; Josef Hamberger designed the bronze crucifix, the ambo and the tabernacle . The two figures standing on the back wall of the altar represent St. Johannes Ev. and the Mother of God with the child. They are copies after Tilman Riemenschneider , made by the sculptor Willy Prix .

The reverse glass pictures of the 14 Stations of the Cross hanging on the west and north walls come from the painter Erich Schickling , a picture of the 15th Station (Resurrection) by the English painter Thomas Denny was added in 1990.

The altar is surrounded on three sides by benches for the congregation, they offer space for about 250 people.
