St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic parish church in Siersdorf , Aldenhoven municipality , in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist was consecrated under number 25 in the list of architectural monuments in Aldenhoven .

history

A wooden church in Siersdorf probably existed as early as the 8th century. From 1264 to 1266 this was replaced by a Romanesque church. Around 1510, this church was also replaced by a two-aisled Gothic church with a three-sided closed choir and a bell tower in front . The tower burned down several times in the 19th century. The top floor with the bells was built according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . In the 1950s the Gothic church became too small, so that in 1957 a rectangular extension was added on the north side.

There are significant works of art in the church. Particularly noteworthy is the rood screen arch , which is unparalleled anywhere in the world, it is located directly in front of the Flemish carved altar from 1520. Furthermore, there are eight figures of saints from 1525, as well as two canons' benches from the same year in the old part of the church a pulpit from 1535. Anton Wendling created the windows in the old part of the church in 1958, and Wilhelm Buschulte designed the windows of the extension in 1964.
