The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Amöneburg , a town in the district of Marburg-Biedenkopf in Central Hesse , was originally built in the 14th century. The church at Petrus-Musculus-Platz 1 is a protected architectural monument . It is located directly on the summit of the 365 m high Amöneburg Mountain and is therefore visible far into the Amöneburg Basin .

history

The tower is the only remnant of the collegiate church founded in 1360 . The monastery was abolished in the course of secularization in 1803. Today's church was built from 1866 to 1871 according to a design by Georg Gottlob Ungewitter (1820–1864) after his death under the direction of Peter Zindel (1841–1902).

architecture

The tower from the 14th century, on the north side of the choir , is crowned by a crested helmet, which was added after 1762. On the ground floor of the tower is the sacristy and below it an ossuary from the 16th or 17th century.

The neo-Gothic cross basilica has a choir closed on three sides. The choir, the crossing and the aisles have four-part vaults and six-part vaults in the central nave and the transverse arms .

Furnishing

Two choir stalls and four benches are the rest of the former baroque furnishings. The leaded glass windows and the organ front were made according to designs by Carl Schäfer (1844–1908) in the 19th century.

In the church there are tombstones from the 17th to 19th centuries.
