After the Second World War , large numbers of Catholic expellees and members of the armed forces came to Hörnum. For them and the holiday guests, services were initially held in makeshift rooms. The Josephs Church was consecrated on September 9, 1962 . It belongs to the parish of St. Christophorus (Westerland) .

After the church in Hörnum was used less and less and a modern new church was built in Westerland in 1999 , it was profaned in 2008 and the project to use it as a Wadden Sea house was developed. The building with 300 m² of exhibition space was initially leased to the Wadden Sea Protection Station for 30 years . The redesign was financed by the Naturschutzgesellschaft Schutzstation Wattenmeer eV, the ecumenical environmental foundation of the Archdiocese of Hamburg and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany as well as the State of Schleswig-Holstein .

On July 3, 2013, Detlef Hansen from the National Park Administration opened the new Wadden Sea Ark National Park exhibition together with Archbishop Werner Thissen and the bishop's representative in the Evangelical Lutheran Sprengel Schleswig and Holstein Gothart Magaard .
