St. Joseph in Jeserig

Sankt Josef is a Catholic church in the village of Jeserig , municipality of Groß Kreutz (Havel) , in the west of the state of Brandenburg . The church, which belongs to the Archdiocese of Berlin, is a listed building .

history

With the Reformation under Elector Joachim II in 1539, Catholicism in Brandenburg came to a standstill. The churches were converted into Protestant ones, including the Jeserig village church .

Migration movements as a result of industrialization and the flight after the Second World War created new Catholic communities in Brandenburg. Also in the villages east of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel a community was formed again that is affiliated to the Catholic parish of the Holy Trinity Brandenburg an der Havel .

Especially after the World War, there was a strong growth of the community due to the influx of expellees from the areas east of the Oder and the Sudetenland . At the beginning of 1952, a local master shoemaker , Heinrich Senkbusch, donated part of his property at Fernstrasse 1, today's Bundesstrasse 1 , to the Catholic community so that they could build a chapel for the Catholics in the area. Until then, the community had been accommodated as a guest in a Protestant prayer room in the neighboring Schenkenberg . The designs for the modern church building came from the diocesan architect Felix Hinssen and the Brandenburg architect Conrad Puchalla . The construction work was ultimately carried out by a Liere company from Groß Kreutz. The foundation stone was laid on May 8, 1952 . After a year of construction, the church was consecrated on July 11, 1953 by the Berlin bishop Wilhelm Weskamm . She received the patronage of St. Joseph. The church was thus one of the early sacred buildings in the GDR . Father Georg Smelz became the first clergyman.

Building

The church is based on the style of medieval Brandenburg village churches. It is a plastered building oriented from north to south. The arched portal is located in the wide, four-story tower facing north. The church windows with simple yellow lead glazing are also round-arched. The outer walls are supported by pillars . There is a sacristy annex in the southwest .
