The Roman Catholic Church of St. Josef von Matzingen in the canton of Thurgau is located in the center of the village at Altholzstrasse 6 . The chaplaincy St. Josef Matzingen belongs to the parish of St. Johannes Wängi , which in turn is merged with Aadorf to form a pastoral care association.

history

The Matzingen church was first mentioned in a document in 894. However, throughout the Middle Ages, the Matzinger church was oriented towards Wängi . In 1518 the Tobler Komtur allowed the foundation of its own parish fund and the building of a larger church. Since ten years later the population changed to the new faith, the village church subsequently became a Protestant church.

In the 20th century, the proportion of Catholic residents in Matzingen grew, so that the Catholic parish of Wängi, to which Matzingen still belongs to this day, decided to build a branch church. For 15 years, services were held in an emergency church before today's St. Josef Church was built according to plans by the architect Alfons Weisser between 1971 and 1972.

Building description

Church tower and exterior

The St. Josef Church is located on a level, park-like area. The polygonal concrete structure is completed by a flat roof and has a low but distinctive church tower on its southern side. There is a three-part bell in its cubic bell room. The foundation stone with the year 1971 is attached to the entrance to the church , above which there is a stone relief since 1977, which was created by Franco Annoni, Lucerne, and shows the church patron, St. Shows Joseph with baby Jesus.

Interior and artistic equipment

The east-facing church has a pentagonal floor plan with a rounded liturgical area , which is raised from the rest of the church by two steps. A sliding wall can be used to connect the church interior with the community hall to form a larger room. The daylight penetrates on the eastern side through four light shafts and on the north and west side through a total of seven glass windows that are attached to the upper part of the masonry. The furnishings in the church space emphasize the simplicity of the building: a simple terrazzo floor, rough wall plaster and a wooden belted ceiling with individual colored areas in geometric patterns. The baptismal font and the altar are made of concrete, with the table top of the altar shaped like a fish. The symbol of the fish with its Greek letter sequence ICHTHYS refers to Jesus Christ . On the wall behind the altar is the metal tabernacle . A Corpus Christi was also attached to the choir wall ; The three statues that round off the furnishings are carved out of wood: the patron saint, St. Joseph, Our Lady on the back wall and St. Antonius at the church entrance.

Felsberg organ from 1987

organ

Thanks to a legacy, an organ fund was set up when the church was built in 1971. In 1987 the purely mechanical organ was built by the Felsberg company. It has eight registers , which are distributed over two manuals and pedal . The organ front is adorned with wood carvings by Duri Caviezel, which refer to the Trinity (three fish, the Lamb of God and the dove of the Holy Spirit ). The sub-bass 16 'is free behind the organ case. The disposition of the Felsberg organ is:

I main work C – f 3
1. Reed flute 8th'
2. Principal 4 ′
3. octave 2 ′
4th mixture 1 13
II Positive C – f 3
