St. Joseph in Broken Mast

St. Joseph is a Catholic parish church in the Paderborn district of Schloss Neuhaus - Mastbruch . The church and parish belong to the parish of St. Martin von Tours in the Paderborn deanery of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

Originally the Catholics in Mastbruch belonged to the community in Neuhaus Castle. After the First World War , the number of believers increased sharply, so that the church was often overcrowded. The situation eased slightly when the St. Michael parish in Sennelager was established in 1924 . Pastor Wurm from Neuhaus therefore suggested building his own church in the Mastbruch district. He had envisaged a plot of land and suggested that a fundraiser be carried out for the new building. At a congregation meeting, however, this was rejected by the believers because they could not raise money.

During the Second World War , the number of believers rose again, so that the pastor Wittler from Neuhaus again proposed in 1943 to found his own community in Mastbruch. In part of the Mastbruch orphanage, the first mass was read on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945. At the same time, the center of Neuhaus was under artillery fire . From now on, trade fairs were regularly read in Mastbruch, which, due to the high popularity, often had to take place outdoors.

In May of the year the parish vicarie got a makeshift church from Staumühle. The military barracks in the Senne were dismantled and set up opposite the school in Mastbruch. The barrack was officially used as a kindergarten, as no church buildings were approved during the Third Reich. The church was consecrated on August 26, 1945 . 600 believers followed the service, which a chapel helped to create. A bell from the Rochus Chapel in Neuhaus hung between two pine trees. This was withdrawn for melting down, but was discovered in a Paderborn factory.

In December 1945 the parish vicarie St. Joseph was officially established without its own asset management. From January 1, 1946, church records were kept. The expansion of the makeshift church continued. In 1947, the Benteler company erected a metal frame that served as a bell tower. The bell came from the parish church in Neuhaus Castle. A year later a wooden tower was placed on top of the sacristy and the church tower clock from Neuhaus was moved here.

In August 1947 the construction of a new vicariate began. The building material was difficult to obtain, but 20 quintals of rye could be exchanged for 200 quintals of cement. The roof tiles were obtained from Alfen . In 1949 the new building could be occupied. In November of that year, a collection of donations for the new building of the parish church began. The community had to raise around a third of the construction cost, that is 50,000 marks, itself. By January 1950, 11,000 marks could be collected in this way. 1951 continued to collect. Construction materials were already accumulating around the vicariate, as gravel and stones could already be procured. With the help of loans, the church council was able to decide to build the new parish church in January 1952.

Construction work began in March of that year, and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 23, 1952. They deviated from the plans of the architect Josef Lucas in that the nave was built one yoke shorter. The topping-out ceremony was held at the end of June. On the 3rd Advent, December 14, 1952, the Archbishop of Paderborn Lorenz Jaeger consecrated the church. In 1954 the organ was installed.

In 1957 three new bells could be collected for 25,000 marks. In 1960 the makeshift church, which was now used as a venue, was sold and demolished. In October 1961, the church council applied to the archbishop's general vicariate to be elevated to a parish. This corresponded to the application on May 6, 1962. In 1966/67 a kindergarten and a youth home were built on the parish property.

In 1970 the church was completely renovated. In 1979 the existing organ was expanded. In 1980 planning began for a parish center. Donations were collected in 1984 and construction began the following year. The center was inaugurated on February 1, 1987. During the second church renovation in 1990/91, the parish center served as a place of worship.

On December 1, 2002, the parish was merged with the St. Heinrich and Kunigunde parish in Neuhaus Castle to form the Neuhaus Castle Pastoral Association. After the Paderborn-Sennelager pastoral association was joined, the association was transformed into the newly founded parish of St. Martin von Tours in 2017 .
