St. Katharina and St. Silvester is a chapel in the Sonthofen district of Imberg.

history

The chapel was first mentioned in a document on November 29, 1417. The Bishop of Constance gave indulgence to every visitor ; however, this was subject to conditions. In 1517, the Augsburg bishop Heinrich von Lichtenau confirmed a perpetual mass donated by the Imberg community. The beneficiary who benefited from it received a house. He was obliged to read four masses a week and served the parish church in Sonthofen on Sundays. This benefit went up in 1602 in the Sonthofen Hospital.

Building

Interior with a view of the altar

The oldest part of the Imberg Chapel is likely to be the nave . It dates from the 15th century. Around 1500 the choir and sacristy were added. The roof structure was renewed towards the end of the 18th century; In the course of this measure, the old wooden ceiling was replaced by a plaster ceiling. The chapel was renovated between 1978 and 1980.

Under its basket arch, the choir has a pointed arch window facing east and a wider window on the south side. The nave has a flat vaulted plaster ceiling over a throat , which is oriented on the axis of a pointed arch window. The sacristy has a barrel vault and a Gothic rectangular window to the west and east . The dates 1732, 1759 and 1826 are carved into the deck of the gallery paneling. Under the gallery on the west side is the ogival entrance in an arched niche. The roof turret over the choir has an onion hood .

Furnishing

Remains of the frescoes above the entrance

Traces of frescoes from the 15th century have been preserved on the outside of the chapel. The pictures on the west side above the entrance showed Christ between the twelve apostles. You can see John with the chalice and Andrew with the cross. On the north side, Pope New Year's Eve can be seen with a bull.

Two 18th century benches still stand on the gallery. The figures on the neo-Gothic altar from around 1900 are from the first altar in the chapel. The Imberger Madonna stands between statues of St. Catherine and St. New Year's. It is not certain who the master of the Imberg Altar was. The Imberg Madonna is mostly attributed to the workshop of Hans Multscher in Ulm , from which the side figures could also come; however, the workshop of Ivo Strigel from Memmingen is also being discussed for the latter . Originally the chapel had another altar in honor of St. Barbara; but this is lost. In the chapel there are plaques commemorating the Imbergers who died in the First and Second World Wars.

The clockwork of the roof rider dates from 1782. The bell of the Imberg chapel was cast by Hans Löffler in 1560 and hung in Margarethen's chapel until 1945.

In front of the entrance there had been a cast iron crucifixion group from the Sonthofen ironworks since 1882, which in 1978 was moved about 800 meters to the south. A Way of the Cross with 15 stations was designed by Ludwig Caspar Weiß in 1838 .
