St. Konrad is a Catholic parish church built in 1953 in the Strietwald district in the north of the city of Aschaffenburg .

history

A church was evidently not planned for the constantly growing suburban settlement founded in 1933, which was called Dr. Otto Hellmuth settlement from 1936 onwards . In any case, no church is mentioned in the foundation stone certificate for the first 40 houses, which begins with the words “In memory of the suburb of Aschaffenburg, built in the year of the national survey in 1933”. A model National Socialist settlement was supposed to be built on the Strietwald, and religious activities were not planned for the residents. The National Socialist city administration under Mayor Wilhelm Wohlgemuth rejected an application dated September 16, 1935 for a free building site for the Strietwald Church ; an exchange of land proposed in 1936 was also rejected. Erhard Keller, pastor of St. Michael since 1934 , at least succeeded in founding an association for sick people and pastoral care under the patronage of his brother Konrad von Parzham, who was canonized in 1934 , in the nearby Damm district to which the Strietwald belonged . The city of Aschaffenburg, on the other hand, built a kindergarten and an NSV nurses' station at Gänsruh in 1937/1938. The kindergarten was also used as a church room from April 1945. As early as 1935, the architect Rudolf Schwarz , who worked in Offenbach am Main , had presented the first drafts for a church on a hill. The church building from 1953, on the other hand, is based on designs by the Würzburg architect Erwin van Aaken , who worked together with Albert Boßlet after 1945 . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 2, 1953 , and the foundation stone was laid on April 26 .

building

The east facing church is 43 m long and 16 m wide, the main entrance accented with pillars is on the south side, as is the 25 m high tower. The sgraffito by the Aschaffenburg artist Bruno Supernok above the portal shows the Holy Brother Konrad, with scenes from the parish on the left and scenes from the life of Brother Konrad in Altötting on the right. On September 1st, Jakob Klein, Willi and Josef Böhnlein from Strietwald installed the 4.50 m high tower cross they had donated. The cross is made of iron and is gold-plated, in the copper ball on which the cross rises there is a tablet with the inscription: “Made out of gratitude for the happy return from the world war”.

Interior

Inside the church, in the east choir, the altar with tabernacle rises above six steps . To the west are the organ and singers' gallery, including a marble baptismal font designed by the architect van Aaken. The glass mosaic windows are the work of the painter Richard Reis from Obernburg am Main. On November 29th of the same year the Würzburg bishop Julius Döpfner consecrated the church. "The church, nicely integrated into the landscape, dominates the townscape convincingly and, together with the school building, forms a harmonious unit."

In 1954 two side altars (Maria and Josef) were erected, works by the artist Alois Bergmann-Franken in Glattbach , in autumn of the year the Terracotta Way of the Cross , created by August Weckbecker in Munich . As part of the redesign of the chancel according to the specifications of the Second Vatican Council , a new altar table, the tabernacle column, the cross and an ambo were designed by the Aschaffenburg artist Hermann Kröckel . The altarpiece in modern mosaic painting comes from Hans König in Trennfurt, it shows a cross between the Greek letters Alpha and Omega on a stylized cloud , above the Christ enthroned (Secret Revelation 1.12–16). With the last renovation in 1993–1994, the side altars were removed and replaced by two wooden sculptures financed from donations: Mary with Child and St. Conrad.

organ

In 1957, an organ from the Emanuel Kemper & Sohn workshop in Lübeck, under the direction of master organ builder Karl Borchert (Ingelheim), was installed. It was demolished in 2007 and replaced by an organ from the Freiburg Orgelbau Hartwig and Tilmann Späth workshop . The two-part organ case with the modern style elements integrates the glass mosaic windows by the Obernburg painter Richard Reis. The instrument has the following disposition :
