St. Laurentius (Eschenbach in the Upper Palatinate)
The St. Laurentius Church is the Catholic parish church of Eschenbach in the Upper Palatinate .
history
The church building was built in 1440 to replace a previous Romanesque building; The late Gothic hall church was not completed until 1608. The start of construction of the tower is documented by a plaque on its west side in 1492; after 49 years it was completed.
The church, a late Gothic hall building, was probably not completed until 1608. In the ribbed vault over the right side altar this year and the name of the country recorder Matthes Krell are attached. The vault in the nave, which previously had a flat ceiling, was built in 1578 during the Protestant era. In 1560 the sacristy was set up, which should originally have been the cemetery chapel. In 1893 the church was extended by a third to the west. The original length is marked with a plaque on the north outer wall.
Building description
The choir , probably the oldest part of the building, has a yoke that ends in five octagonal sides. The three-aisled nave, a low staggered hall with a raised central nave, has four bays. There is a rib vault in the choir and in the south aisle, the other naves have mesh vaults. The ribs grow partly out of the wall, partly they rest on simple corbels, including some in the form of small human heads. On the outside of the choir there are buttresses that are detached and have tracery panels on their end gables.
Furnishing
Altars
The high altar of Wilfried Senoner was ordained on June 21, 1987th The predella of the high altar is adorned with reliefs depicting the Adoration of the Kings. The winged retable above contains relief carvings showing the suffering and death of Jesus Christ: Mount of Olives, flagellation, crowning of thorns, carrying the cross and - in the center - crucifixion. The group under the cross is divided into the mourning women with John (left) and the soldiers with the Pharisees (right). At the top of the burst stands the risen One with a mighty flag of victory, triumphant over hatred, sin and death. The suffering Jesus is not shown distorted in pain, but, from the knowledge of the closeness of God, superior and sovereign. Four scenes from the life of St. Lawrence can be seen on the back of the wings : Laurence before the judge, distribution of church treasures, imprisonment, martyrdom.
The popular altar is adorned with a representation of the Lord's Supper, on which the scene of the announcement of the betrayal by Judas Iscariot , who takes the bite that Jesus hands him, is shown.
Köferl epitaph
On the north side of the choir, the gaze falls on the church's most famous work of art, the Köferl epitaph . It has a height of 2.50 m and a width of 1.70 m. A scene-rich table made of Solnhofen limestone is framed by two columns tapering towards the top and a somewhat protruding entablature. Between the bases of the pillars, which adorn the coats of arms of Caspar Köferl and his wife, the inscription reports that the deceased held important court posts with Emperor Maximilian II (1564–1576) and Rudolf II (1576–1612). Then he was councilor and land clerk to Elector Ludwig of the Palatinate (1576–1583). Köferl died in Regensburg and was transferred to Eschenbach.
Below the epitaph are choir stalls from the 17th century with twisted columns.
