Architecture and history

A first church in Benneckenstein was probably built in the 15th century by monks from the Walkenried monastery. It was located in the lower part of the city, roughly where the monument to Andreas Werckmeister is today. It was also consecrated to St. Lawrence , who is also venerated as the patron saint of miners and smelters. The church was destroyed in July 1627 in the course of a punitive expedition by the Imperial Catholic General Tilly against the Harzschützen .

A new church was consecrated in 1642, but it was demolished again in 1649 due to its dilapidation . The services were then carried out in the Ratskeller.

Today's church was built in 1852 after three years of construction in half-timbered construction in the neo-Gothic style. The inauguration took place with a festive service on September 5, 1852 by the general superintendent Johann Friedrich Möller and pastor Schubart. The outer walls are paneled and covered with slate . There is an apse on the west side of the nave .

On the east side there is a church tower, which probably dates back to the 17th century and which was preserved during the fire of 1627. At times it served as an apartment for the girls' schoolmaster. Due to the local development, it was decided, contrary to the original practice, to add the nave to the west of the tower. The hood of the originally much lower tower was built in 1894. The tower is also clad with slate. The slate cladding was renewed by the Johannes Pönitz company from Wernigerode until 1972. In 1991 a renewal of the supporting structure of the top of the tower, which was in danger of collapsing, was necessary, which was carried out by the local Wendt company. In finial while 49 coins, medals, medals and documents were found. The oldest coin was from 1638. In addition to Prussian coins , there were also French coins.

Unlike the nave, the tower and sacristy belonged to the city. It was not until 1935 that the ownership structure was merged.

The interior of the church is designed as a gallery with classical style elements. On the east side is the two-manual organ created in 1852 by Adolf Reubke from Hausneindorf . It corresponded to the sound ideas of the Romantic era . In 1940 the organ building company Wiegand Helfenbein from Gotha redesigned it in the sense of neo-baroque .

There is also a 17th-century painting of the Crucified in the church. Two pictures depicting pastors are also noteworthy, including a portrait of Pastor Möhle by Friedrich Kallmeyer . In the apse you can see colored glass pictures created in 1907 by the Ferdinand Müller glass painting company based on designs by Professor Schultz. In their center they represent Christ as the Good Shepherd. On the altar are two seven-armed oak candlesticks , which were made in Harzgerode .

The marble baptismal font of the church was donated in 1858 by confirmands . The central aisle leading through the church stalls was built in 1907 when the central pieces were removed from the benches that had been through until then.

The bell in the church tower consists of four bells. The oldest and largest at the same time dates from 1607 and was created by the Erfurt bell caster Möhring. The smallest bell was made in 1927. It was donated in memory of the inventor and patron of the community, Wilhelm Schmidt. The casting was carried out by the Schilling bell foundry from Apolda .

During the Second World War , the community had to give up three bells, one of which was returned to the community after the war. The two lost middle bells came from the Benneckensteiner foundry Stützer. In order to replace the lost bells, the two bells cast from chilled iron in Apolda were purchased in 1956. In 2007, however, the two new bells were already heavily rusted. Financed by donations, they acquired two bronze bells cast in Lauchhammer .

In 1986 the Israel company renovated the interior of the church, based on the original color scheme.

The church's heating system consisted of three iron stoves and was converted to underfloor heating in 2003 .

The last pastor living in Benneckenstein was Ulrich Stabe. The parish has been part of the Elbingerode parish office since 2014. In the same year it was decided to sell the rectory and the parish hall. It is intended to do the parish work in the church. A multi-purpose room with a kitchen and toilet is planned below the organ gallery.

In the local register of monuments , the church is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 02661.
