From 1933 to the 1970s, the place was the terminus of the Virginia Creeper Trail of the Norfolk and Western Railway railway line.
The local West Jefferson Dr Pepper (WJDP) are one of only two franchisees of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group in the USA who are allowed to manufacture the Mountain Dew lemonade under license.
