St. Laurentius (Wolnzach)

St. Laurence

St. Laurentius is the Roman Catholic parish church of Wolnzach , a market in the Upper Bavarian district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm .

Foundation and building history

According to old documents, the Bishop of Freising, Hitto (811-835), gave Abbot Jakob from the cathedral monastery in Freising the church pledges of Wolamotesaha, today's Wolnzach. This church was probably the lay church of the Siegertszell monastery. There is probably a connection between this note and the remains of the foundations from the Carolingian period, which were found during the church expansion in 1912/13.

The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence . The high altar picture shows the martyrdom of St. Lawrence.

architecture

Gallery and organ

There are no more visible traces of the Romanesque foundation building from the 9th century, which was expanded around 1080. The building shows itself today inside and outside in its baroque redesign from the beginning of the 18th century, but from the outside the old structure of the Gothic east choir from the 15th century can still be seen. The building is a three-aisled hall church, 55 meters long and 22 meters wide. The mighty 60 meter high bell tower (56 m without ball and spike) over a square floor plan is covered with a double onion roof.

In 1912 the church was renovated and got its current appearance. Before that, the church tower wore a pointed helmet. In 1913 the Munich painter Josef Wittmann (* 1880 Windischeschenbach, † 1968 Munich) replaced the old, badly damaged ceiling paintings with scenes from the life of the church patron, St. Laurentius painted in 3 ceiling paintings. The ceiling painting 4 by Josef Wittmann shows Laurentius in glory. Above the organ, Josef Wittmann painted a ceiling picture of David, the singer of the old covenant and Cäcilia, the singer of the new covenant, united with the angels for the Gloria Dei, for the glory of God. Also the spandrels over the pillars with the enthroned four occidental doctors Jerome with the lion, Augustine with the heart, Pope Gregory and Bishop Ambrosius as well as the four evangelists Matthew with human beings, Mark, the interpreter of St. Peter with the lion being, Luke, the companion of St. Paul with the bull being and John with the eagle being, as well as the gray paintings in the stitching caps, which illustrate the painful and glorious secrets of the rosary, are by Josef Wittmann. In 1955 these ceiling paintings were restored by the painter M. Weingartner. Drafts for the ceiling paintings from 1913 by Josef Wittmann are preserved in the rectory. During the tower renovation in 2013, the green patinated copper of the tower onion was replaced, which is currently copper-colored.
