The St. Laurentius Church in Fahretoft is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Fahretoft district of the Schleswig-Holstein community of Dagebüll . Today's church building was completed at the beginning of the 18th century and is one of the symbols of the place.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery, on which two memorial stones commemorate sons of the place: the mathematician and astronomer Hans Momsen (1735-1811) and the missionary and founder of the Schleswig-Holstein Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society Christian Jensen (1839-1900).

history

Bell tower of the St. Laurentius Church

The first church built in this place on the Kirchen throws is mentioned as early as 1240; it burned down around 1636. An indication of this is given in the church accounting book of the parish Risum , in which an issue of four Reichstaler for the " Fahretoft church burned down by God's weather " is noted for August 3, 1637 . Further church fires are mentioned for the years 1638 and 1668.

The renovation to the church that still exists today began under the rule of Duke Friedrich IV (1694–1702) and was completed in 1703, according to a memo and a still preserved inscription.

Repairs were made in 1837/38 and 1854/55. Also in 1854 the wooden bell tower ( stack of bells ) was erected somewhat apart from the church, which replaced the simple bell structure that had existed until then. In 1906, central heating was installed in the interior of the church.

Church building and interior decoration

Church building

The church is a simple rectangular hall building, on the south side of which there is a small vestibule. The bell tower south of the east wall of the church building is a square structure with St. Andrew's cross and an octagonal cantilevered tent roof , which was covered with zinc sheet in 1902 . The bell tower is equipped with two bells made in 1926 and 2005.

altar

The late Gothic oak altarpiece, which was built around 1480, was originally five-winged and today still has one side wing. It has been in the St. Laurentius Church since 1703 and originally came from the church in Tondern , which received a baroque altar in the same year. In 1855 the old painting was painted over with white oil paint. The colored design has now been restored. The crucifixion scene can be seen in the middle part of this winged altar ; On the side wings there are shown four apostles and saints arranged in two rows one above the other .

The middle part of the reredos is 217 cm high and 231 cm wide and shows different groups of figures, the three-part division of which is emphasized by the keel arches attached to the top . On the left is the unconscious Maria , behind her on horseback Longinus with a servant. The middle group of figures consists of Pilate dictating in armor and his scribe. The right side shows the soldiers and soldiers on horseback throwing the dice for Jesus' robe . The two thieves can be seen to the right and left of the crucified Christ. The background of the scene is a painted landscape with palaces.

Under this central part is the Gothic predella , which today has baroque painting. In the rectangular middle field the Lord's Supper is depicted, in the lateral parts the writing apostles Peter and Paul are depicted.

The side wings show statuettes of the twelve apostles - six on the left and six on the right - the bishops St. Dionysius and St. Nicholas , as well as the two saints Catherine and Margaret .

More pieces of equipment

The wooden pulpit, dating from 1647, is supported by a figure of Moses carrying the tablets with the ten commandments . The pulpit is decorated with various carved biblical scenes.

The baroque baptismal font is supported by three angel putti attached to the base and covered by a richly decorated lid.

The church also has a window donated in 1909 by a Chicago Hansen family depicting Jesus as the "Good Shepherd."

Pastorate and church services

Opposite the Kirchenwarft is the pastorate built in 1961 on the Gabrielswarft.

Since Fahretoft belongs to the parish of Dagebüll, the Sunday services alternate between the St. Dionysius Church in Dagebüll and the St. Laurentius Church in Fahretoft. The current pastor has been Antje Iser-Asmussen since April 2006.
