history

"Haus Hase" on a terp

Before the first Mandränke in 1362, Fahretoft was a parish in the middle of the North Frisian Utlande and far from the open sea. The storm surge destroyed the westernmost villages in the parish of Osewoldt, Spickebüll and Tocksbüll. Fahretoft became a Hallig , which can still be recognized today by the many terps .

Bökingharde was the name of the area around the Geest Island Risummoor , to which Easter March and West March belonged. The Ostermarsch was understood to mean the current Störtewerker-, Kohldammer- and Herrenkoog, while Westermarsch meant the Halligen Fahretoft, Dagebüll and Galmsbüll . Everything in between was later diked and was previously still Watt. The Halligen and the Landanwachs of the Westermarsch were initially only bordered with summer dikes. Major dike work began in the 16th century. From 1568 to 1573 the first unsuccessful attempts were made with the support of Dutch dike builders. In the 17th century, Duke Friedrich III tried . von Gottorf, with the help of a Jesuit society , to build a dike in a straight line from Waygaard via Fahretoft, Dagebüll, Galmsbüll to Wiedingharde . With the mobilization of 5500 men it was possible to complete the dike of the Bottschlotter Tief in 1633 and to win the Bottschlotter Koog , whereby the military had to ensure the maintenance of order. The embankment of the Kleiseer depth did not succeed. The second Mandrank in 1634 ruined a large part of the previous efforts.

After this flood, attention was initially focused on securing the second line of the dike. It was not until 1648/52 that the Blomenkoog was dyed, which is named after the bailiff and after the tasks of most of the other participants, the main shareholder of the Octroy Blome. But Fahretoft was not yet protected by a sea dike. Ultimately, between 1686 and 1688, the residents of Fahretoft built the sea dike alone and without outside help. At that time the island was larger than the current kings.

Fahretoft was the seat of the district or office of the same name from 1889 to 1967 . On January 1, 1978, the municipality of Fahretoft was incorporated into Dagebüll.

Attractions

Jens J. Lützen House

A landmark of the town of Fahretoft is the St. Laurentius Church , which was built in 1703. In August 2003 the 300th anniversary of the church was celebrated. The church is located on the Kirchwarft; The pastorate, built in 1961, is directly opposite on Gabrielswarft.

Another landmark is the Jens-J.-Lützen -Haus, a local history museum that was opened in October 2004 and is integrated into a museum park.

There was also the Hans Momsen School , which was rebuilt in 1963 but had existed on Gabrielswarft for 200 years , named after the mathematician Hans Momsen . The school had around 50 students and four teachers. An important aspect of the school was the maintenance of the North Frisian language . From kindergarten age onwards, all children received lessons in Bökinghard Frisian, with each child supported by an adult native speaker as mentor.

Due to a new school law, according to which schools with fewer than 80 children have to be closed, school operations were stopped in the 2009/2010 school year.

The Heimatverein Dagebüll eV has maintained a "village history hiking trail" with historical stations since it was founded in 1982 (extensive equipment collection in the current Hans Momsen parish hall, a reconstructed historical bakery, an information sheepfold with thematic depictions, the church, a historical "brick path"). Guided tours are offered in summer; Groups can register at any time. There is a very extensive literature on Fahretoft (illustrated books, chronicle volumes, Low German stories, etc.).
