St. Mary's Visitation in Impekoven

The Catholic Church of St. Mary's Visitation is in the Impekoven district of the municipality of Alfter in the Rhein-Sieg district , not far from Bonn . It was built in 1968/1969 according to plans by the architect Gottfried Böhm and is a branch church of St. Mary's Assumption (Oedekoven) in the parish community of Alfter ( Archdiocese of Cologne ). The church building stands as since 2018 monument under monument protection .

history

The church is the third house of worship in Impekoven. A first chapel in Steingasse, probably a half-timbered building , was first mentioned in a document in 1826, but according to tradition it should have existed as early as 1650. It was canceled in 1889. In 1884, a neo-Gothic chapel was built on the site of today's church on the foothills at the upper edge of the village by the architect, builder and contractor Anton Becker (1853–1899), who was born in Lüftelberg . Since the community grew rapidly after the Second World War due to its proximity to the federal capital Bonn , it had become too small and was demolished in 1967 because an expansion was not possible due to the damaged building condition.

Impekoven was a branch parish of St. Lambertus in Witterschlick and in 1986 the parish was changed to Oedekoven.

Church building

On the initiative of the then subsidiary Heinz Schütte , the well-known architect Gottfried Böhm was won over for the new building, who had just built the Neviges pilgrimage cathedral. Gottfried Böhm designed the church as a “crystal clear monolith”, comparable to a rock crystal . It is a one-piece concrete structure with a round tower. Other associations are “God's castle” or the “tent of God among the people” as the dwelling of the “ wandering people of God ”, as it corresponds to the church image of the Second Vatican Council , which ended in 1965 . The foundation stone in Impekoven was laid on July 14, 1968, when the shell was already finished. The first service was Christmas mass on December 24, 1969.

The concrete-facing interior of the church was designed in the spirit of the council as a meeting room, so that the priest and the congregation , facing it, can celebrate Holy Mass . In order to emphasize the liveliness of the community in relation to the statics of the concrete, strong colors were chosen for the church interior, the benches are kept in red to match the stone tiles, the doors are designed in green.

Furnishing

The altar cross with the corpus from the old chapel
  • The altar table is made of Würzburg red sandstone, as is the sacrament house , which stands on a slender column. They were designed by Albert Wirths from Geroldshausen . In 2006 the furnishings of the chancel were supplemented with an ambo , which the local stonemason Hermann Büchel from Nettekoven made from the same stone.
  • The baptismal font in a niche in the south of the church and the holy water basin on the entrance door were also designed by Hermann Büchel in 1987 and made of Belgian granite . The baptismal font symbolizes a "tree of new life" : an ancient trunk like faith, which bursts through baptism and produces new buds (symbolized by balls).
  • The Madonna figure, the depiction of the enthroned Mother of God with the baby Jesus on her lap and the dove in her arms, was donated privately. It was probably made in France or Spain at the beginning of the 17th century.

reception

"In a dreary environment, an unmistakable Böhm-Beton architectural sculpture that dominates the environment as an unmistakable landmark."

- Ingeborg flag (1984)

"The differentiated and extremely careful processing of the poured and in places sand-blasted concrete contributes to the effect of the building."

- Andreas Denk (1997)
