history

Church from 1903

After the Lutheran Reformation , Catholic parish life in Alfeld only began again with industrialization around the middle of the 19th century. Since 1853, Catholic church records have been kept in Alfeld again . In 1855–57 the late Gothic chapel of the former Paulus Hospital was acquired, expanded and consecrated to the patronage of St. Marien and Bonifatius . On July 1, 1895, the community was raised to a parish . After the Herz-Mariä-Kirche was built, the chapel was demolished and a residential and commercial building was built in its place.

In 1902/03 the neo-Gothic Church of the Heart of Mary was built by Richard Herzig on the site of today's church . The foundation stone was laid in 1902 and the inauguration at Pentecost in 1903. However, due to the instability of the marl floor , this building had been showing cracks since the 1940s. Since 1958 Alfeld was the seat of the newly formed Deanery Alfeld-Gronau. In the 1960s, the church building was so dilapidated that it was demolished in favor of the new building. The last service took place on May 4, 1969, and the same year it was demolished.

On October 11, 1969, the foundation stone for today's church was laid by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker, and on June 20, 1971, the consecration by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . On December 1, 2002, the Deaneries Alfeld-Gronau and Bockenem-Detfurth were merged to form today's Deanery Alfeld-Detfurth, Alfeld remained the seat of the Deanery. Since November 1, 2006, the parish has also included the formerly independent parishes in Delligsen , Duingen and Winzenburg (the latter with a branch chapel in Everode ). In 2011 the parish had 4275 members.

Architecture and equipment

The Marienkirche, located around 105 meters above sea level , is a reddish brick building with some brightly contrasting exposed concrete elements . The free-standing bell tower was only realized in 2006. It stands on the pile foundations for a bell tower that were already set when the church was built, but was not implemented according to the original plans. The tower forms a cross in plan and bears the bell of the old church in an open suspension. The church hall consists of the community room and the altar area. The community room is composed of three segments in a fan shape. The middle segment towers over the side like the central nave of a basilica and is equipped with ribbon windows in the upper aisle . The focal point of the fan is formed by the altar area, which has been raised one more step and whose roof bears a Greek cross .

Inside, the altar wall with the tabernacle integrated into a city of God design attracts attention. The valuable figure of Our Lady on the left side wall was donated for the old church in 1952. It comes from a Cologne workshop in the 15th century.
