St. Martinus in Erlenbach

The Church of St. Martinus in Erlenbach in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg is a Catholic parish church that was built in the mid-18th century in the late Baroque style.

history

A parish church of St. Martin in Erlenbach was first mentioned in 1335. The place came to the Teutonic Order in 1484 , which had the current church rebuilt between 1753 and 1760 according to plans by Johann Michael Keller the Younger . In 1781 the neighboring rectory was built again by Keller and Franz Häffele .

Towards the end of the Second World War , the church suffered severe damage from incendiary grenades and artillery fire in April 1945 . A neo-Gothic high altar from 1889 was destroyed and replaced by a new altar in the Baroque style in 1949. Numerous cracks, holes and scratches in the masonry were almost completely removed during a major church renovation from 1974 to 1986.

description

Look at the choir

The parish church of St. Martinus is a late baroque, single-nave plastered building, which is structured by sandstone pilasters and cornices. The main portal of the church is in the western gable side, which is also equipped with a figure of Mary donated in 1775 in a niche and figures of Peter and Paul on the corners of the ornamental gable. A choir is attached to the nave to the east, and the church tower is to the south of the choir . A Martin's altar made in 1949 made of wood and stucco marble is set up in the choir. The figures of St. Stephen and Laurentius next to the altar come from a Baroque altar from 1755 and were made by Johann Anton Esterbauer or Franz Esterbauer from Neckarsulm. On the south wall of the nave there is a baroque pulpit depicting the four evangelists. In the west of the nave there is a modern gallery on which the organ is located.

The nave is spanned by a stitch cap vault, the stucco work of which comes from Johann Michael Winsberg from Mergentheim. The ceiling painting in the nave shows the Assumption and was created by Giovanni Battista Ferrandini . The choir also has a ceiling richly decorated with stucco work and ceiling paintings.

The church is rich in furnishings and figural decorations. A Madonna on the east wall and Gothic statues of Saints Barbara, Catherine and Martin date from the late 15th century. In the choir, in the church interior and on the walls there are several other figures of saints, and there are also numerous older pictures with Christian motifs on the side walls of the nave and on the parapet of the gallery. The church's consecration crosses are designed as colored stucco reliefs.
