Saint Matthew Church

The St. Matthäi Church is the Protestant church in the village of Glinde , which belongs to the town of Barby, in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located in the center of Glinde. The current church replaced the first church in Glinde, which was built in 1116 as a village church. This first church was in today's village cemetery; it was replaced by a small cemetery chapel after the new church was built.

Architecture and history

The neo-Gothic church was built in two phases. First, the church tower was built in 1850/51. The nave to the east was built between 1884 and 1886.

The church was built of limestone . The design was less based on simple village churches and more on urban church buildings. Vaults, buttresses and columns were used as architectural elements. There are also clover-leaf arches , three-pass and four-pass .

The altar and the pulpit were created in the workshop of the wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch in Wernigerode . The Zörbiger organ builder Wilhelm Rühlmann delivered the two-manual organ with 15 registers .

Noteworthy are two stained glass from around 1500 from the old church. They are in the nave and show Mary with the child in an oval aureole and Christ with the cross in his arms.

The church of St. Matthew is registered in the local monument register under registration number 094 60928 as an architectural monument.
