Parish Church of St. Matthew

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Matthew is a listed church building in Altena , a town in the Märkisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). Church and parish belong to the Altena-Lüdenscheid district dean of the diocese of Essen .

History and architecture

Its predecessor was founded on October 28, 1847 by Bishop Franz Drepper from Paderborn consecrated . Since it could not be included in the planning of the new building, it was canceled.

On the foundation stone in the choir can be read: Hic lapis primarius positus est a parocho J. Cramer on June 29, 1896 (This foundation stone was laid by Pastor J. Cramer on June 28, 1896). The compact, neo-Gothic hall church of five bays closes with a 5/8 choir . It was built from 1895 to 1899 under the supervision of Johannes Franziskus Klomp . It was built in quarry stone made of greywacke with decorative shapes made of tuff stone . A roof turret is attached to the building and a tower stump stands on the west side. The side aisle yokes are covered with hipped transverse roofs. The wide interior is structured by changing the material of plaster and clinker brick. The design of the choir windows comes from de Leeuw, they were executed by Wilhelm Derix . The foundation of the washed-out sand caused difficulties, the pillars had to be found eight meters below the floor of the building. The church was founded on September 29, 1899 by Bishop Augustin Gockel consecrated .

The first organ was built in 1924–1926 by the organ building company Eggerth / Anton Feith (Paderborn). In 1996 a new instrument was built by the organ building company Gebr. Link (Giengen), reusing pipe material from the first organ, which in the meantime had been electrified and expanded. The slider chest instrument has 27 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
