St. Moritz cemetery church in Sonnefeld

Building history

In 1425 a Fechheim branch church was mentioned in Hofstädten . The church probably had its origin in a chapel of an Ottonian royal estate. With the elevation of the neighboring Sonnefeld to a parish in 1540 with the former monastery church as the parish church, St. Moritz was only used as a cemetery church. After the church was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1634 , a new church was built in 1654. Restorations were carried out in 1724 and 1856, among others.

description

The choir tower church stands high on a slope. It was probably formerly enclosed by a fortified churchyard. It is a simple ashlar building made of sandstone with a tile-covered gable roof and a slated gable. The windows and doors are all rectangular. The interior of the 14.8 meter long and 5.8 meter wide nave is spanned by a plastered wooden barrel. There are single-storey galleries with Tuscan wooden columns on three sides . The 3.9 meter long and 4.0 meter wide choir room on the tower base has a flat ceiling. In the vestry to the north, 3.4 meters long and 5.8 meters wide, there are Gothic building remains in the basement. The two upper floors of the tower were probably renewed in 1856 and provided with four classical gables. The upper floors are slated like the octagonal pointed helmet.

organ

In 1670 a small organ was installed, which was probably replaced by a new instrument towards the end of the 18th century. In 1856, the Neustadt organ builder Georg Christoph Hofmann built a new organ with a three-tower front . The instrument had seven registers on a manual and pedal . In 1969 the Sonnefeld municipal council sold the organ for 400 DM to the Protestant parish in Manau .
