Fechheim is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Neustadt bei Coburg in the Coburg district .

geography

The elongated street village is about seven kilometers south of Neustadt at the foot of the Fechheimer Berg on the state road 2206 , which connects Fürth am Berg and Rödental . The small brook Fechen flows south of the village.

history

Fechheim is likely to have originated in the 8th century when the second original community was founded in the Coburg region . The first patron of the church was the Franconian apostle Kilian .

The first mention of the place in 1162 is located in a spell letter of Bamberger Bishop Eberhard on the recovery of a forest, the southern boundary of the path of "Vechene" (Fechenheim) to "Muggiburg" ( Mupperg formed), by the Banz of Hermann Graf von "Wolveswach" (Wohlsbach).

The place name Vechen (Fachen) is derived from facha , which probably means space with a subject. This points to a fenced-in place, a court facility, which Fechheim had as the seat of a penny court . The Centgericht came to Neustadt at the beginning of the 14th century.

The residents of Fechheim lived from agriculture and small craft businesses. All farms and lands were hereditary fiefs . The teachings were different. Several estates belonged to the ducal office of Coburg. Feudal lords were also the lords of the manors in Bertelsdorf , Birkig , Heldritt and Einberg .

When the Thirty Years' War broke out in 1618, the place had twelve houses, of which four were still inhabited in 1638. Livestock, in 1630 there were 25 cattle, 300 sheep and 35 pigs, no longer existed in 1638.

On the basis of an ordinance by the State Ministry of September 24, 1872, 48 men from the town founded the Fechheim volunteer fire department on November 2, 1874. In 2011 she had 31 active soldiers. The Fechheim savings and loan association was founded around 1880. From this the local Raiffeisenbank developed , which after several mergers in the 20th century was merged into the VR-Bank Coburg . Fourteen people from Fechheim lost their lives in the First World War and twelve in the Second World War. A memorial for the 149 fallen soldiers of the Fechheim parish of the two wars stands in front of the Michaeliskirche.

In a referendum on November 30, 1919, 30 citizens of Fechheim voted against the accession of the Free State of Coburg to the Thuringian state and eight voted for it. Thus, from July 1, 1920, Fecheim belonged to the Free State of Bavaria . In the early 1920s, the place was connected to the power grid. A bus line was set up that ran from Coburg via Fechheim to Fürth am Berg and existed until 1938. Water pipes from two elevated tanks on Fechheimer Berg were laid in 1937.

Fountain by Hans Rucker in Fechheim

In World War II there was no damage to buildings. On April 12, 1945, units of the 3rd US Army reached the village. Particularly due to Sudeten German refugees, the population grew to over 500 at the end of 1946. In 1956, Fechheim won the “The more beautiful village” competition in the Coburg district . The first prize, a fountain with a horse as a fountain figure, was designed by Hans Rucker and has been a reminder of the event since 1958.

In 1971, after centuries, school lessons in the Fechheim school, which children from the neighboring towns of Aicha , Mittel- , Ober- and Unterwasungen and Horb had attended, ended. The first school house was built in 1698. A new building was inaugurated in 1860. In 1875/76 the building was expanded to include a second teacher's apartment and a stable room.

On January 1, 1971, Fechheim merged with the previously independent municipalities of Aicha, Fürth am Berg, Mittelwasungen, Plesten and Unterwasungen to form the municipality of Wasung. Wasung was dissolved on January 1, 1976 and Fechheim was incorporated into the city of Neustadt bei Coburg .

church

Fechheim's landmark is the Evangelical Lutheran Michaelskirche with its 48 meter high church tower, the core of which is dated to the beginning of the 13th century and the top of which with the four turrets was built in 1601. The nave of the rectangular hall building was built between 1702 and 1704. The church has been called Michaeliskirche ever since. Ceiling frescoes, 86 painted parapets of the galleries and a magnificently designed baroque pulpit adorn the nave.

Son of the place

Fechheim's best-known son is the theologian , composer and pianist Johann Paul Schulthesius (1748–1816), whose father Johann Nicolaus was a teacher and organist in Fechheim.
