Chapel of St. Nicholas in Emmereis

St. Nikolaus in Emmereis near Rettenberg im Allgäu is the oldest surviving Romanesque chapel in the Allgäu . It was originally a Romanesque country church with a secular upper floor , which, however, no longer exists as a separate floor, but has meanwhile expanded the church space upwards.

history

In the middle of the 12th century, monks built a chapel on a Nagelfluh rock near the hamlet of Emmereis (part of the municipality of Rettenberg in Oberallgäu) in the form of a fortified church with two meter thick walls, a saddle tower above the choir with loopholes and a battlements. It was not until the middle of the 13th century that the interior was frescoed based on the model of St. Peter and Paul in Reichenau .

In keeping with the spirit of the times, the chapel was Gothicized at the end of the 15th century . The two apsidal figures St. Nikolaus and St. Stephanus (around 1480) from the school of Ivo Strigel have survived from this period . A severe earthquake collapsed the southwest edge of the chapel in 1509. During the reconstruction, the Romanesque south entrance was walled up and a Gothic west entrance was created.

The baroque style brightened the frescoes by adding additional windows, but also destroyed the frescoes, especially on the north side. The other frescoes were cleaned up and painted over. In 1724/1725 the saddle tower, which was removed to the ridge height, was given an onion-shaped dome .

From 1975 to 1977 the Romanesque frescoes came to light again during the interior and exterior renovation by the State Office for Monument Preservation . The chapel was then largely returned to its original state.
