Church tower and parish church of St. Paul

The Catholic parish church of St. Paul is in Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 46 in the Königswiesen district of Regensburg .

history

Due to the creation of a new and "modern" quarter with numerous high-rise buildings on the former grounds of the Königswiesen estate , it became necessary to separate a parish area from St. Wolfgang and to set up the St. Paul parish curate. The Munich architect Franz Xaver Gärtner made the design for the new community center . The foundation stone for the new church with the parish center was laid by Friedrich Morgenschweis on October 19, 1975. The church was inaugurated on November 28, 1976 by Rudolf Graber . The then university professor Josef Ratzinger was invited as the preacher. On October 19, 1980 the parish curate was elevated to a parish. The church is also used for church services by the Catholic college community of the University of Regensburg .

architecture

In terms of urban planning, the community center fits into the given structure of the high-rise estate. Only a strictly cubic architecture made it possible to accentuate the church center. The given property has a considerable gradient. For this reason, the building, consisting of the church with its adjoining rooms, kindergarten, community hall, youth rooms and the parsonage with the associated office rooms, was integrated into the site at different heights. According to the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council , the people's altar was designated as the center of the square church space. One room unit was designed as an open Mary's chapel and is thus related to the altar. With the materials and construction principles that were contemporary at the time, a space was created that allows visitors to relax and contemplate.

Furnishing

inside view

The color-designed surrounding church windows and the altar wall by Erich Schickling come into their own thanks to the simple furnishings . The sculptural and bronze works were made by Friedrich Koller from Froschham near Laufen . He created the altar , the ambo , the sediles , the three holy water basins , the twelve crosses of the apostles and the baptismal font , which is supplied with fresh water, from Savonnieres , a fine-grain shell limestone. He designed the door handles in the form of a cross, the monstrance and the tabernacle from scraped bronze . The latter is designed as a stylized bread basket. The church interior made of natural wood harmonises with the brick red of the exposed walls. Another piece of equipment is a restored body of Christ on the south side , made around 1790 in Cologne, which was in a badly damaged condition after the chaos of war and saved from disposal and came from the place of origin to Regensburg. The body was completely restored and given a new frame based on the remaining paint. Therefore, it can be experienced today as it was when it was created. In 1987 Werner Persey gave the church a way of the cross, which was applied directly to the walls using the open line technique .

organ

After a few makeshift arrangements, a three-manual digital sacred organ has been used to organize the services since 1987 .

Bells

In June 1976 the 24 m high bell tower was built from ten prefabricated elements, which were combined with a heavy-duty crane on top of one another. The last prefabricated tower section was installed on June 4th.

The bells of the 3-part Gloria peal (Christ the King, Paul and Mary bells ) have the following strikes : c "-d" -f "

The three ring bells are part of the 12-part carillon (overall tone sequence: c "-d" -e "-f" -g "-a" -b "-h" -c "'- d"' - e "'- f "'). The bells c "and f" sound in major rib. The bells were cast by Rudolf Perner in Passau on August 6, 1976 and consecrated on October 31, 1976.
