St. Peters Church on Karnol from the south

St. Peter auf Karnol is a South Tyrolean late medieval church in the hamlet of St. Peter in Zwölfmalgrei , a district of Bozen . The church is located at an elevated valley edge length on the foothills of the Rittner Berg.

The Romanesque inventory, in 1213 as "ecclesia sancti Petri" in a document by Count Albert III. mentioned by Tyrol , was enlarged in the 15th century as a simple, barrel-vaulted building with a round apse, pointed tower and a side chapel with pointed arched windows and groin vaults . The romanizing facade design dates from the 19th century.

In 1288 the church was named as "sand Pêter" in the lordly general landlord of Count Meinhards II of Tyrol-Gorizia . In 1295 a wine farm "ad Curnol ad sanctum Petrum" is recorded in the register of the Bolzano notary Jakob Tugehenn . In the district court code of Gries-Bozen from 1487, Ulrich Rueb appears as his own district captain "zu sand Peter auf Karnol" , who also functions as the sovereign tax collector.

The neo-Romanesque niche altar was carved by Josef Überbacher, the statues from around 1880 were made by Anton Kob .

From the years 1603 to 1806 there are 69 account books of St. Peter auf Karnol in the Bolzano city archive (Hss. 1251-1320), which were kept by the respective church provosts .

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1977 .
